10 Day the Cape and Garden Route Golf Itinerary
The full Western Cape, played one way: Cape Town and the winelands first, with Jack Nicklaus's Pearl Valley, then over Sir Lowry's Pass to Arabella on the Bot River lagoon and east along the N2 for the cliff golf at Pinnacle Point, two nights inside the gates at Fancourt and a Knysna finale at Pezula. Five to six rounds, wine, whales in season, and a one way flight home from George. Here is the day by day.

Who this trip suits
This is the South Africa trip for golfers who want the whole Western Cape rather than a single resort: city, winelands, lagoon, cliffs and forest in one unhurried arc. The exchange rate makes it the best value luxury golf journey on earth for dollar, pound and euro travelers, the golf runs from Nicklaus winelands polish to clifftop spectacle to The Links at Fancourt, the country's perennial number one, and the non golf days, Table Mountain, Stellenbosch tastings, whale season at Hermanus, the Knysna Heads, are as good as the rounds. Couples and mixed groups thrive on it; so does a four ball that wants 36 holes at Fancourt.
It is the wider companion to our Garden Route focused ten day itinerary, which spends longer east of George; this version weights the first half toward Cape Town and the winelands so first time visitors miss nothing. The trip is one way by design, Cape Town in, George out, which saves a long backtrack and keeps every drive under four hours. A travel day rhythm of golf, drive, rest day repeats comfortably across the ten days.
The 10 day plan
Arrive in Cape Town, city and Table Mountain
Fly into Cape Town, settle near the V&A Waterfront or the City Bowl, and give the first full day to the city: the cable car up Table Mountain, Bo Kaap, dinner on the harbor. Jet lag from Europe is minimal, the time difference small, so day 2 can absorb an easy warm up round at one of the city's parkland clubs if the legs insist. Confirm the week's tee times, especially Fancourt.
Pearl Valley, the winelands
Drive under an hour into the winelands for Pearl Valley, the Jack Nicklaus signature course at Val de Vie between Paarl and Franschhoek, long a host of the South African Open and the most complete golf day in the winelands: immaculate, water threaded and framed by the Drakenstein mountains. Taste in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch afterward and sleep among the vines.
Over the pass to Arabella
Cross Sir Lowry's Pass and drop to the Bot River lagoon for Arabella, the Peter Matkovich course whose closing holes along the water rank with any finish in the country. Stay at the hotel on the estate, and in whale season, roughly June to November, detour the 30 minutes to Hermanus, the best land based whale watching on earth. A spa afternoon settles the matter for the non golfers.
The long drive east, then golf on the cliffs
Day 5 is the travel day, three and a half hours east on the N2 through the Overberg wheatlands to Mossel Bay, where the Garden Route begins. Day 6 belongs to Pinnacle Point, the Matkovich design strung along the clifftops where every hole sees the Indian Ocean and several play over it; in the right wind it is the most photographed golf in South Africa. Choose your tees with humility and keep a camera in the cart.
Two nights inside the gates at Fancourt
Drive the short hop to George and check into Fancourt, because staying is the access: the Montagu and Outeniqua parkland courses are reserved for members and hotel guests, and The Links, the Gary Player designed transformation of an airfield that is routinely ranked South Africa's best course and hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup, releases only limited tee times to hotel guests. Play Montagu or Outeniqua on arrival day, The Links on day 8, and let the halfway house spoil you. Book The Links the moment the trip is confirmed.
Pezula above the Knysna Heads, then fly home from George
Finish an hour east in Knysna at Pezula, the headland course above the famous Heads where fairways run through fynbos with the lagoon and ocean trading places below. Spend the last evening on Knysna's waterfront over oysters, then double back 45 minutes to George on day 10, drop the car and fly home via Johannesburg or Cape Town. If the legs want one more course, Simola's Nicklaus design across the valley obliges.

When to go and how to run it
Travel between October and April for the southern summer, with February and March the insiders' pick: settled weather, warm sea air and the December school holiday crowds gone. Whale season runs roughly June to November if Hermanus matters to you, and even midwinter is playable along the Garden Route, where the climate is gentler than Cape Town's. Hire the car one way, Cape Town in and George out, keep the long Overberg drive to daylight hours, and book Fancourt's Links and the Pinnacle Point morning slots first since both are supply constrained. Carts are standard at Pinnacle Point and easy everywhere; caddies are available and excellent at Fancourt. Budget the saving from the rand for one great winelands dinner; it will earn it back in memory alone.
Plan your Cape and Garden Route trip
Tell us roughly when and who is travelling, and one concierge secures the Fancourt stay and Links tee time, books Pearl Valley, Arabella, Pinnacle Point and Pezula, arranges the one way car and costs the ten days to the head. The Links goes earliest, so the sooner we start the better, with no obligation.
Cape and Garden Route itinerary questions
How many days do you need for a Cape Town and Garden Route golf trip?
Ten days is the sweet spot: three nights around Cape Town and the winelands, one on the Bot River lagoon at Arabella, then five or six along the Garden Route for Pinnacle Point, two nights at Fancourt and a Knysna finish at Pezula. That paces five or six rounds with wine, whales and the N2 coast road between them, ending with a one way flight home from George. Always confirm tee times and rates directly before booking.
Can visitors play Fancourt's courses?
The Montagu and Outeniqua courses are reserved for members and Fancourt hotel guests, and The Links, routinely ranked the best course in South Africa, releases only limited tee times to guests staying at the hotel. The practical answer is to book two nights at Fancourt, which is exactly how this itinerary handles it. Always confirm access and rates directly with the resort before booking.
When is the best time for this trip?
October to April is the prime window, the southern summer, with November to March warmest; the Cape winter from June to August is wet and blustery in Cape Town though milder along the Garden Route. December and January are South African school holidays, when tee sheets and the N2 fill up. For value and calm, aim for October, November, February or March. Always confirm conditions and rates before booking.
Is the driving hard on a Garden Route golf trip?
No, and it is half the pleasure. The route runs one way along the N2: roughly 90 minutes from Cape Town over Sir Lowry's Pass to Arabella, about three and a half hours on to Mossel Bay for Pinnacle Point, 45 minutes to Fancourt at George and an hour more to Knysna for Pezula. Rent the car one way, drop it at George airport and fly out. Roads are good; just avoid driving rural stretches after dark.
