Why golf in Cape Town and the Garden Route

No golf trip combines scenery and value quite like the Western Cape. The drive from Cape Town along the Garden Route is one of the great road journeys in golf, stitching together championship courses set against mountains, vineyards and the Indian Ocean, and the whole region offers premium golf at prices that would shame anywhere in Europe or America. Add Table Mountain, the Winelands, whale watching at Hermanus and the food and wine of Franschhoek, and a golf trip here becomes a holiday the non golfers will fight to join.

The quality runs deep. The Links at Fancourt near George, a Gary Player design that hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup, is regularly named the best course in South Africa, and around it sit the Montagu and Outeniqua courses in a 54 hole resort. Closer to Cape Town, the Jack Nicklaus designed Pearl Valley and Gary Player's Erinvale anchor the Winelands, while the clifftop Pinnacle Point at Mossel Bay is among the most dramatic courses on earth. It is a long haul from Europe and North America, but few destinations repay the flight so completely.

The regions

Steenberg, Clovelly, Royal Cape and Milnerton in and around the city, parkland and links under Table Mountain, with the V and A Waterfront, the Cape winelands of Constantia and the peninsula drives on the doorstep.

The Winelands

The Garden Route

Fancourt's three courses at George, Pinnacle Point at Mossel Bay, and Pezula and Simola at Knysna, the spectacular coastal run east toward the ocean cliffs and the Outeniqua mountains.

The courses that matter

Erinvale

Gary Player · Somerset West

Getting there and around

Cape Town International is well served by long haul flights from Europe and the Gulf, and George airport on the Garden Route takes short domestic hops or sits at the end of a stunning four hour drive east from the city. The classic itinerary starts in Cape Town and the Winelands, then follows the N2 along the Garden Route to George and Knysna, so a hire car is part of the experience, with the drives among the best in the world. Distances are real, though, so plan the route to keep transfers sensible.

Where to stay

Split the trip. Base first in Cape Town, near the Waterfront or in the Constantia winelands, for the city courses and the peninsula, then move into Franschhoek or Stellenbosch for the Winelands golf and the food and wine. On the Garden Route, the Fancourt resort at George is a self contained golf base, while Knysna suits Pezula and Simola. Let one planner sequence the legs so the golf, the lodges and the long drives all line up.
