How we chose

How we ranked the best of Western Cape golf

Our ranking puts the quality of the design first, then setting, condition and the wider experience. The Western Cape combines championship pedigree with some of the most spectacular settings in golf, so the Gary Player links at Fancourt and the Jack Nicklaus courses lead our list, with a run of dramatic coastal and winelands layouts close behind. The verdicts are ours; the design credits and tournament histories we cite are a matter of record.

The courses spread from Cape Town and its winelands eastward along the coast to the Garden Route around George and Knysna, roughly a four hour drive end to end. Most are part of estates or resorts that welcome visiting golfers, and the combination of golf, scenery, wildlife and wine makes the Western Cape one of the great golf and touring trips anywhere.

The ranking

The ten best golf courses in Cape Town and the Garden Route

From the Gary Player links at Fancourt to the clifftop drama of Pezula and Pinnacle Point, ranked with our verdicts and the reasons to play each one.

01

Fancourt, The Links

George · Gary Player · 2000

South Africa's finest inland course and a Gary Player design shaped from flat farmland into a thrilling links, host of the 2003 Presidents Cup. Firm, rumpled and genuinely tough, it plays like a transplanted British links on the Garden Route. Reserved for guests of the Fancourt resort, and the standout round in the Western Cape.

02

Pearl Valley

Paarl · Jack Nicklaus · 2003

One of Jack Nicklaus's most visually striking designs, set on a vast estate in the Paarl winelands beneath the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains with the Berg River in play. Immaculately conditioned and consistently ranked among the best in the country, it is the pick of the courses near Cape Town.

03

Pezula

Knysna · Golfplan · clifftop

A spectacular clifftop course on the bluff above Knysna, looking out over the Indian Ocean and the lagoon entrance from one of the most dramatic settings in golf. Tight, undulating and exhilarating, it is the signature round of the Garden Route's eastern end.

04

Arabella

Kleinmond · Peter Matkovich · 1999

A Peter Matkovich design beside the Bot River lagoon, the largest natural lagoon in South Africa, with three memorable closing holes hard against the water. Beautifully kept and set in the coastal mountains within easy reach of Cape Town, it is a regular in the national rankings.

05

Steenberg

Cape Town · Peter Matkovich · parkland

A polished Peter Matkovich parkland on a historic wine estate in the Constantia valley, minutes from the city beneath the Steenberg mountains. Manicured, scenic and a fine pairing of golf and wine, it is the best round within the bounds of Cape Town itself.

06

Simola

Knysna · Jack Nicklaus · 2005

Jack Nicklaus's first signature course on the Garden Route, draped over the hills above Knysna with sweeping views across the lagoon and river. Dramatic elevation changes and tumbling fairways make it a memorable and demanding round, and a natural companion to Pezula.

07

Erinvale

Somerset West · Gary Player · 1995

A Gary Player design beneath the Helderberg mountains east of Cape Town, host of the 1996 World Cup of Golf. A handsome two part layout, parkland on the front nine and more rugged on the back, it remains one of the best known championship courses in the Cape.

08

Pinnacle Point

Mossel Bay · Peter Matkovich · 2006

A clifftop course at Mossel Bay where several holes run along the very edge of the cliffs above the Indian Ocean, a Peter Matkovich design from 2006. As much spectacle as golf, with whale watching from the fairways in season, it is one of the Garden Route's signature experiences.

09

Fancourt, Montagu

George · parkland · par 72

The Montagu is the highest ranked of Fancourt's two parkland courses, a sheltered, beautifully conditioned layout that has often topped the national parkland rankings. Open to resort guests alongside the Links, it makes the George estate a complete golf destination in itself.

10

De Zalze

Stellenbosch · Peter Matkovich · winelands

A Peter Matkovich design on a wine and fruit estate outside Stellenbosch, with vineyards, the Bottelary hills and water features framing the holes. Relaxed, scenic and excellent value, it is one of the most enjoyable winelands rounds and rounds out our Western Cape ten.
