Pezula Championship Course
High on the eastern cliffs above Knysna, Pezula is the Garden Route's most theatrical round, an American designed championship course by Ronald Fream and David Dale that opened in 2000. A par 72 of around 6,900 yards, it runs out across high ground with the Knysna lagoon below before tumbling toward the cliffs over the Indian Ocean, all dramatic elevation change, fynbos framing and big coastal views.

The verdict
Pezula opened in 2000 to a design by Ronald Fream and David Dale of GolfPlan, carved into the headland above Knysna on the Garden Route. It plays as a par 72 of around 6,900 yards, and the routing makes full use of the dramatic site: the front nine rolls across high ground with lagoon views, while the back nine descends toward the cliffs with the Indian Ocean filling the horizon.
It is bold, modern, occasionally exhilarating golf, with generous fairways framed by fynbos and elevation changes that turn ordinary holes into memorable ones. The conditioning is reliably strong and, with five sets of tees, it suits a wide range of handicaps. As the standout course on a Garden Route trip, combined with Knysna's lagoon, forests and food, Pezula is well worth the climb.

The holes worth the trip
The opening holes set out across the headland with the Knysna lagoon spread out below, generous from the tee but exposed to the coastal breeze, so the wind is part of the calculation from the first swing. Fynbos and rocky outcrops frame the corridors and punish the wild miss.
The course saves its drama for the back nine, which steps down toward the cliff edge with the Indian Ocean as a backdrop and elevation changes that ask you to commit to the carry. These are the holes golfers remember, played with one eye on the line and one on the view.
Five sets of tees mean the test flexes from holiday friendly to genuinely demanding off the back, but the constant is the setting. Few courses in South Africa marry championship length with this much coastal theatre.

Knysna is the natural base, a relaxed lagoon town with waterfront hotels, guesthouses and some of the best seafood on the Garden Route, all a short drive from the course. The Pezula estate itself offers high end resort accommodation on the headland.
The Garden Route rewards a slower trip, with Plettenberg Bay, the forests around Wilderness and the wine and whales of the wider Cape all within reach. Pair Pezula with Plettenberg's and George's courses for a full golfing week along one of the world's great coastal drives.
