Pearl Valley
A Jack Nicklaus Signature course set among the vineyards of the Cape Winelands, opened in 2003 beneath the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains. Water threads through all eighteen holes and the mountain backdrop is constant, on a course good enough to have hosted the South African Open three years running and rated among the very best in the country.

The verdict
Pearl Valley opened in 2003 on the Val de Vie Estate, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design laid out in the valley between Paarl and Franschhoek with the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains rising on every side. It plays as a par 72 of around 6,577 yards, and Nicklaus has run water through all eighteen holes, so the layout is as strategic as it is beautiful. South Africa's course rankings place it consistently among the top handful in the country, and it hosted the South African Open from 2007 to 2009.
The course rewards thoughtful golf rather than brute force. Nicklaus frames generous landing areas then defends with water, bunkering and bold, well guarded greens, asking for accuracy on the approach above all. With the Cape Winelands all around, world class wine estates minutes away and Cape Town just over half an hour distant, it is the centrepiece of one of the most civilised golf trips on earth, where the round is only half the pleasure.

The holes worth the trip
Water is the theme from the first, with the Berg river system and a series of dams brought into play by Nicklaus across the property. The mountains frame almost every shot, and on a still Cape morning the reflections make it one of the prettiest rounds in Africa.
The par 3s are the signature, several of them played across water to greens guarded by sand, where the right club and a committed swing are the only way home. Through the round the generous fairways tempt the driver, but the approach is where Nicklaus asks his questions, demanding the correct portion of bold, contoured greens.
The closing holes gather toward the clubhouse with water never far away, a fair and photogenic finish that suits the setting. It is a course that flatters the good shot and quietly punishes the careless one, the hallmark of a Nicklaus design.
