How to Play the Best Golf in Stockholm

The playbook, step by step

Step 1: build the trip around Bro Hof Slott

Forty minutes northwest of the city on the shore of Lake Malaren, Bro Hof Slott is the round that justifies the flight. The Stadium Course, a Robert Trent Jones Jr design opened in 2007, runs to a scarcely believable 7,357 meters from the black championship tees and staged the European Tour's Nordea Masters in its pomp. Nobody sane plays it from the tips; pick the tees two or three boxes forward and it becomes a magnificent, water laced examination rather than a death march. The same designer's Castle Course, opened in 2010, makes the second round if you stay out there a full day.

Step 2: book Ullna for the contrast

Ullna, about 30 minutes north of the center, is the other half of the argument: a manicured Jack Nicklaus design wrapped around Lake Ullna, all framed fairways and water on the closing stretch. It is private club polished but visitors are welcomed on both weekdays and weekends, and the green fee has hovered around 1,500 SEK, with 2025 visitors reporting roughly 220 euros including lunch in the clubhouse. Book ahead by email or the club site rather than turning up on spec.

Step 3: bring your handicap certificate

Sweden is a federation country and the paperwork matters. Bro Hof Slott requires a valid handicap certificate or card, and most established Stockholm clubs expect the same. A screenshot of your home federation app is normally accepted; without anything, you are relying on goodwill. Advance booking is essential at both marquee clubs, and Bro Hof asks prospective visitors to book through reception.

Step 4: aim for the white nights, pay less in the shoulders

The season runs roughly May through October. June is the showstopper: around the solstice, Stockholm daylight stretches past 10pm, which means a full corporate day can still end with 18 holes, and a committed pair can stack 36 without an early alarm. May and September trade a little warmth for emptier tee sheets, and Ullna in particular discounts when the corporate traffic thins in high summer.

Step 5: stay central, drive out

Both headline courses sit within 30 to 40 minutes of downtown, in opposite directions, so base yourself once. Three or four nights in Norrmalm or Ostermalm covers Bro Hof on the big day, Ullna the next, and leaves an afternoon for the archipelago boats. A hire car beats taxis for the golf days; the courses are not well served by transit.

Is Stockholm worth a dedicated golf trip?
