Ljunghusen
Sweden's most revered links, set on the sandy Falsterbo peninsula southwest of Malmo where the Baltic meets the Oresund. Laid out from 1932 and grown to 27 holes in 1965, the first such club in the country, it threads firm, rumpled fairways through pine, heather and dune, and has long anchored the best of southern Sweden's golf coast.

The verdict
Ljunghusen was founded in 1932 and shaped over the following decades into one of the very few genuine links in Sweden, on the low, sandy Falsterbo peninsula at the country's southwest tip. In 1965 it became the first club in Sweden with 27 holes. The headline loop, holes 1 to 18, plays as a par 72 of around 6,330 yards, modest on the card but rarely modest in the wind, which sweeps in off the Baltic and the Oresund with little to stop it. This is golf on sand: firm turf, blind shoulders, heather and pine, and greens that ask for a run up as often as a carry.
What makes it special is the land. The fairways move through low dunes and stands of Corsican pine, the rough is true heathland, and the sea is never far. It is a thinking course rather than a brutal one, where the smart line and a controlled ball flight beat raw length. For the travelling golfer it is the centrepiece of the Falsterbo and Skane golf cluster, an easy half hour from Malmo and the Oresund bridge, and a natural pairing with neighbouring Falsterbo Golfklubb. Come for the rare chance to play links golf in Scandinavia.

The holes worth the trip
The opening holes set the tone at once, running out over firm, sandy ground where the heather waits either side and the wind decides the club as much as the yardage. Position off the tee, not power, opens the greens.
The heart of the round weaves through the dunes and the pines, with several short, devilish par 4s where the bold line flirts with trouble and the safe line leaves an awkward angle. The par 3s are exposed and the greens shed anything struck without conviction.
Ljunghusen finishes the way good links do, with the wind often at its strongest and a premium on keeping the ball low and under control. There are no tricks, only the steady examination of a player who can flight the ball and putt true greens that run firm and fast in summer.

Where to stay nearby
Most golfers base in Falsterbo and Skanor, the genteel seaside villages at the tip of the peninsula, a short drive from the first tee and within reach of Falsterbo Golfklubb next door. It is the most relaxed way to play Ljunghusen early and often.
For a fuller trip, Malmo sits half an hour away with city hotels and easy onward travel, and Copenhagen is barely an hour over the Oresund bridge. Skane's wider golf coast, with several strong courses, makes a multi round week straightforward from either base.
