Golf in Finland

Forest and lake country, a clutch of genuinely ranked courses around the capital, and the strangest hook in golf: in June you can tee off near midnight under a low northern sun. Finland is the quiet surprise of the European golf map.

Why golf here

Forest, lakes and a midnight sun

Finland is not the first country a travelling golfer thinks of, and that is much of the appeal. The leading courses thread through pine and birch forest and along the edges of glassy lakes, the conditioning in high summer is excellent, and the green fees sit far below what comparable golf costs in western Europe. Add a culture that treats the game as relaxed pleasure and you have an unusually good value, unusually peaceful golf trip.

The hook is the light. Around midsummer the southern courses barely go dark, so a long evening round under a gold and rose sky becomes the trip's signature, and the true midnight sun shines further north. The best of the golf clusters within an hour of Helsinki, from the capital out to Hyvinkaa and Hameenlinna, so a short, easy itinerary takes in the country's top courses without long transfers.

The courses that matter

The Finnish courses to build around

The leading group sits in the south, a short drive from Helsinki. Two Tom McBroom designs at Kytaja anchor the country's rankings, with Linna and the historic Helsinki Golf Club close behind. These are the rounds to plan around.

01

Kytaja Golf (South East)

Hyvinkaa · Tom McBroom · par 71

Repeatedly rated the number one course in Finland, a Tom McBroom design routed through dense forest with elevation changes rare for the region. The most complete championship test in the country and the natural centrepiece of any trip.

02

Kytaja Golf (North West)

Hyvinkaa · Tom McBroom · to 7,145 yds

Kytaja's second eighteen and a frequent number two in the national rankings, longer and more open than its sister, stretching to over 7,100 yards from the back tees. Play the two as a pair on consecutive days.

03

Linna Golf

Hameenlinna · opened 2005 · European Tour Courses

A polished course winding through pine and birch beside the historic Vanajanlinna manor and hotel. A member of the European Tour Courses group, it hosted a Challenge Tour event and ranks among the better courses in continental Europe.

04

Helsinki Golf Club

Tali, Helsinki · founded 1932

The oldest and most decorated club in the country, a mature parkland course in the Tali district of the capital that has staged more national championships than any other. Tight, tree lined and full of history, minutes from the city.

05

Kultaranta Golf

Naantali · seaside parkland

A scenic eighteen on the south west coast at Naantali, with archipelago views and sea breezes that add a different flavour to a forest heavy trip. A fine pairing if you base part of the week near Turku.

When to go and costs

Indicative green fees and the season

Finland plays from May to September, with June to August the peak when the turf is at its best and the evenings stretch on forever. Green fees are gentle by European standards, and even the marquee courses cost a fraction of comparable golf to the south. Book Kytaja and Helsinki Golf Club ahead for weekend tee times in high summer; midweek the country is wonderfully quiet.

Indicative 2026 high season visitor green fees in euros. Peak summer rates; shoulder months and twilight slots run lower. Always confirm directly before booking.

A sample trip

Five nights, the southern forests

A Helsinki based week that takes in the country's top courses, all within an hour or so of the capital, with one long evening round saved for the midnight light.

Day 1

Arrive in Helsinki

Fly into Helsinki, collect the hire car and settle into the city for a first evening of harbour dining before the golf begins.

Day 2

Helsinki Golf Club

Open the trip on the country's oldest course, a tight, tree lined parkland in the Tali district just minutes from the centre.

Day 3

Kytaja, South East

Drive north to Hyvinkaa for the number one ranked course in Finland, then stay late for a second nine in the long evening light.

Day 4

Kytaja, North West

The longer sister course to complete the pairing, followed by a lakeside sauna, the most Finnish way to end a round.

Day 5

Linna Golf and home

A final round beside the Vanajanlinna manor near Hameenlinna before the drive back for an evening flight.

Getting there and around

Base in Helsinki and drive out

Helsinki airport has good connections across Europe and beyond, and almost all of the leading golf sits within an hour of it, from the capital out to Hyvinkaa and Hameenlinna. A hire car is essential, as the courses spread through forest and lake country that is a pleasure to drive but poorly served by other transport.

For the famous late light, plan your trip for the weeks either side of midsummer in late June, and ask for an evening tee time at least once. The shoulder months of May and September bring firmer turf, fewer players and lower fees, at the cost of shorter days and cooler air.
