How to Play Golf in Sintra and the Lisbon Coast
The coast west of Lisbon packs a links, a Ryder Cup pedigree and one of Europe's oldest clubs inside half an hour, and all of it books direct. Oitavos Dunes is the standout, an Arthur Hills links rolling to the Atlantic from 123 euros in 2026; Penha Longa's Atlantic course brings Robert Trent Jones Jr drama in the Sintra hills; and the historic Estoril and the estate round at Quinta da Marinha round out a long weekend. Here is how to get on each one, in what order, and from which base.

The short answer
Everything on the Sintra and Cascais coast books direct, with no member introductions and no ballots. The course the trip is built on is Oitavos Dunes, the Arthur Hills design that opened in 2001 on the Quinta da Marinha estate, a par 71 of around 6,370 yards that plays as a genuine links and heathland course tumbling toward the Atlantic inside the Sintra Cascais natural park, and ranks among the best in continental Europe. Its 2026 green fee runs from around 123 euros midweek to about 180 at peak, with weekends from roughly 142 and twilight rates later in the day. The strong inland alternative is the Atlantic course at Penha Longa, the Robert Trent Jones Jr layout from 1992 that hosted the Portuguese Open, set in the wooded Sintra hills at around 130 euros in high season.
Two more rounds complete the cluster. Clube de Golf do Estoril, redesigned by the Scottish architect Mackenzie Ross in 1936 and a long time Portuguese Open host, is a tight par 69 parkland classic among the pines, and Quinta da Marinha, the Robert Trent Jones Sr estate course beside Oitavos, is the gentler resort round with the famous par 3 over the sea. Both run roughly 72 to 100 euros. If the trip grows north, the Silver Coast and its newer links at West Cliffs add a day, covered in our Lisbon and Silver Coast itinerary; this page is about getting on the coast itself.

How to book the Lisbon coast, step by step
- Fix dates in March to June or September to October, then book flights to Lisbon and a rental car. Cascais is about 30 minutes from the airport, and the courses sit within 20 minutes of each other on the coast.
- Secure Oitavos Dunes first. It is the round the trip is built on, the tee sheet is the busiest of the group, and the best morning times go early. Book direct online.
- Add Penha Longa's Atlantic course, taking the resort rate if you are sleeping at the Penha Longa hotel. The two together make the strongest golf day of the trip, links by the sea and parkland in the hills.
- Book Estoril and Quinta da Marinha direct as the gentler rounds; both are easy to slot midweek and forgiving on the budget. Carry a handicap certificate for Oitavos and Penha Longa.
- If you want a fifth round, Belas inland is the value add, or drive north to the Silver Coast links for a different kind of day. Dress code is standard resort golf, a collared shirt and tailored shorts or trousers.
Buggies are bookable everywhere, around 35 to 50 euros, though Oitavos and Estoril both walk beautifully. The afternoon nortada wind off the Atlantic is the local hazard in summer, so the rule on the coast is simple: tee off in the morning and give the evenings to Cascais and Sintra. Booking lead times are gentle, two to three weeks out, longer for Oitavos weekend times in the spring and autumn peaks.
Routing the trip, and where to stay
This is a single base trip. Cascais and Estoril put every course within 20 minutes and pair golf with one of Europe's prettiest resort coasts, the old fishing town, the beaches and the day trips up to Sintra's palaces. The Penha Longa resort in the hills and the Oitavos hotel on the estate are the golf addresses; Cascais itself has the broadest choice of hotels and restaurants. Sintra, a short drive inland, is worth a day off the course for the Pena Palace and the Moorish castle.
For the wider picture, the Sintra and Lisbon coast hub maps the area in full, and the Portugal destination hub sets it against the Algarve and the north. Our best golf courses in Portugal ranking shows where Oitavos and Penha Longa sit nationally, and the how to plan a golf trip to Portugal guide covers the logistics across the country.
