Golf in South Korea

A golf nation that punches far above its size, where vast budgets and dramatic terrain have produced some of Asia's most spectacular and exclusive courses, from the mountains of Gangwon to the cliff tops of the south coast and the resort fairways of Jeju. The courses that matter, the seasons and how to plan it.

Why golf in South Korea

South Korea is one of the most golf obsessed countries on earth, and it shows in the courses. The best of them are built without compromise, with mountains literally blasted away to create a routing and budgets that run into the tens of millions of dollars. The result is a collection of dramatic, immaculately conditioned courses that rank among the finest in Asia: the sculpted mountain holes of Whistling Rock, the Presidents Cup pedigree of Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea, and the cliff top theatre of South Cape, where every hole looks out to sea.

The catch for a travelling golfer is access. Many of the marquee clubs are intensely private, and getting on can require a member introduction rather than a green fee, so a Korea golf trip rewards planning more than most. The upside is a deep field of excellent public and resort courses, above all on the volcanic island of Jeju, that pair beautifully with the food, the spas and the cities. Combine the golf with Seoul or a few days on Jeju and you have a trip with few equals in the region.

The regions

The Seoul Capital Area and Incheon

The golf around the capital and its international gateway, headlined by Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in the new city of Songdo and the four course Sky 72 complex beside Incheon airport, the easiest landing point for a first trip.

Gangwon and the mountains

The dramatic alpine province east of Seoul, home to Whistling Rock and a clutch of high mountain courses where the autumn colour is reason enough to travel, a couple of hours from the capital.

Jeju Island

The volcanic holiday island off the south coast, the country's golf heartland, with the championship Club at Nine Bridges, the 27 holes of Pinx and the longest, mildest playing season in Korea.

The South Coast and Namhae

The southern seaboard around Busan and Namhae, where the Kyle Phillips designed South Cape Owners Club runs along the cliffs above the sea, the most photographed golf in the country.

The courses that matter

Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea

Jack Nicklaus, 2010 · Incheon

A par 72 in the waterfront new city of Songdo that hosted the 2015 Presidents Cup and has topped recent national rankings. A modern, championship test minutes from Incheon airport and the most attainable of Korea's true elite for a visitor.

The Club at Nine Bridges

Fream and Dale, 2001 · Jeju

A Ron Fream and David Dale design on the slopes of Jeju, host of the PGA Tour's CJ Cup from 2017 to 2019, the first American tour event held in Korea. Famous for its extraordinary bunkering and exacting shot placement, and intensely private.

Whistling Rock Golf Club

Ted Robinson Sr, refined by Eric Iverson · Gangwon

Regularly voted Korea's number one, a mountain course carved from rock with sculpted greens and bold bunkering set against a backdrop of forest and ridge line. A bucket list round, and one of the hardest tee times in the country to secure.

South Cape Owners Club

Kyle Phillips · Namhae

A Kyle Phillips design on a dramatic cliff top peninsula on the south coast, with ocean views from all eighteen holes and an art filled, architect designed clubhouse. As spectacular a seaside course as exists in Asia.

Pinx Golf Club

Fream and Dale · Jeju

A 27 hole resort course on Jeju from the same design team as Nine Bridges, set among the island's volcanic landscape and attached to a fine resort. More accessible than its neighbour and a cornerstone of a Jeju golf stay.

Sky 72 Golf Club, Ocean

Incheon · beside the airport

A vast four course public complex on reclaimed land next to Incheon airport, with the Ocean course exposed to the wind off the Yellow Sea. A regular LPGA host and the most convenient golf in the country for a stopover or a first round off the plane.

Getting there and around

Incheon International Airport, just west of Seoul, is one of the best connected hubs in Asia and the natural entry point, with Sky 72 and Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea within easy reach of the terminals. Jeju is a short domestic flight from Seoul or Busan and is the one part of the country built around holiday golf, so many trips split between the capital and the island. The roads and high speed trains are excellent, but the elite mountain clubs sit well outside the cities and a private driver is the smoothest way to reach them. A caddie and a cart are part of the Korean golf experience and are frequently compulsory.

Where to stay

For the capital area, a Seoul city hotel pairs the golf with one of Asia's great cities, while an airport hotel suits a quick stopover round at Sky 72. On Jeju, the island resorts attached to courses such as Pinx make the simplest golf base, with spas and fine dining built in. Near South Cape, the club's own accommodation is the place to wake up above the sea. Let one planner sequence Seoul, Jeju and the south coast so the golf, the travel and the hotels line up. Access to the private clubs is the part that most rewards a connection.

South Korea golf questions

When is the best time to play golf in South Korea?

Spring and autumn, roughly April to June and September to November, are the prime seasons, with mild, dry weather and spectacular autumn colour in the mountains. July and August bring the monsoon rains and humidity, while winter is cold and many inland courses close. Jeju Island plays the longest season.

Which is the best golf course in South Korea?

Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea, host of the 2015 Presidents Cup, has topped recent rankings, while Whistling Rock in Gangwon is regularly voted number one for its mountain holes. The Club at Nine Bridges on Jeju and the cliff top South Cape Owners Club round out the elite.

Can foreign visitors play the top courses in South Korea?

Many elite clubs are private and access can require a member introduction, so a trip needs planning around that. There is a deep field of high quality public and resort courses, particularly on Jeju and around Incheon, that welcome visitors. Always confirm access directly before booking.
