Golf in Porto and the North
Portugal's golf story did not start in the Algarve. It started in 1890 at Espinho, where British port traders laid out Oporto Golf Club, one of the oldest courses in continental Europe. Around it the north has quietly built a trip of its own: coastal links, the green hills of the Minho and Douro, and a Belle Epoque spa course at Vidago Palace, all within easy reach of one of Europe's great little cities.

Why golf here
The north rewards a golfer who wants history and scenery over wall to wall resort golf. Oporto Golf Club, founded by the British port families in 1890, is the headline: a short, firm, windswept links at Espinho with narrow fairways and the Atlantic breeze doing the defending, and the kind of clubhouse where the game's first decades still hang on the walls. North up the coast, Estela runs along the dunes for a second, more modern links test. Together they give the trip its seaside spine.
Inland, the country turns lush and mountainous. Amarante climbs the Quinta da Deveza above the River Tamega with the Marao mountain behind, Ponte de Lima tumbles through the green Minho near the prettiest old town in Portugal, and Quinta da Barca sits on the Cavado estuary near Esposende. Furthest out, at the spa town of Vidago, the grand Belle Epoque hotel has a championship course on the bones of a 1936 Mackenzie Ross nine, one of the most atmospheric places to play in the country.
None of this is far apart, and all of it pairs with the city. Two or three rounds, a day on the Douro among the port lodges and a long lunch in Porto itself make a trip that feels nothing like the Algarve, in the best way. For the south's resort golf, see our Algarve hub.
The courses that matter
| Rank | Course | Why it makes the trip |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Oporto Golf Club | Founded 1890, a genuine links at Espinho and one of the oldest courses in continental Europe. Short and quirky, but pure golf history with the wind off the sea. About €90 to €110 in season, 2026, indicative. |
| 2 | Vidago Palace Golf | A par 72 championship course at the Belle Epoque spa hotel, built out from a 1936 Mackenzie Ross nine and redesigned by Cameron and Powell. Stay and play here for the atmosphere alone. |
| 3 | Amarante Golf | Frank Gordon and Artur Mariani Jr, par 70. A dramatic hillside course on the Quinta da Deveza above the Tamega, with the Marao mountain as a backdrop. Quirky, scenic and a real test of nerve. |
| 4 | Estela Golf Club | A links along the dunes north of Porto, exposed to the Atlantic wind and the closest the region comes to a British style seaside test alongside Oporto. |
| 5 | Ponte de Lima Golf | A green, hilly course in the Minho near one of Portugal's oldest and prettiest towns, a relaxed inland round and a lovely day out. |
| 6 | Quinta da Barca | A compact, well kept course on the Cavado estuary near Esposende, handy for the coast and an easy extra round on a northern itinerary. |

When to go
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| April to June | The best window. Warm, green and settled, courses in full growth, the coast comfortable and the inland hills at their prettiest. Ideal for a links and Douro mix. |
| July and August | Warm rather than fierce, cooler than the Algarve, with the city busy. The links courses catch the sea breeze. Book ahead around the summer festivals. |
| September and October | A superb second window. Warm seas, thinning crowds and the start of the Douro harvest, which fills the river valley with energy. Late October cools and dampens. |
| November to March | Mild but the wettest part of the country, greener for it. Coastal courses stay playable, inland can be soft. Rates fall and the spa towns come into their own. |
What it costs
Northern Portugal is one of the better value golf trips in western Europe. Indicative 2026 green fees run from about €60 to €110 across the region, with the historic Oporto Golf Club and the resort course at Vidago Palace at the upper end and the inland clubs at Amarante, Ponte de Lima and Quinta da Barca lower. Multi round passes and stay and play packages cut the rate further again.
For accommodation, a smart city hotel in Porto runs roughly €120 to €250 a night, less out in the hills, while the Vidago Palace and the Douro wine quintas sit at the luxury end and are worth a night each for the experience. The whole trip costs a good deal less than an equivalent week in the Algarve or southern Spain. All figures are indicative and you should always confirm directly before booking.

Getting there and around
Porto's airport has direct flights from across Europe and sits north of the city, handy for the coastal courses. Oporto Golf Club at Espinho is about 30 minutes south, Estela about 40 minutes north, Amarante and the Douro under an hour east, and Vidago and the deep Minho around 90 minutes to two hours out toward the Spanish border.
Rent a car. The driving is a pleasure here, from the coast road past the fishing towns to the switchbacks up the Douro and the green lanes of the Minho. The city center is best on foot, so plan to park up once you reach Porto and explore the river and the port lodges without it.
Where to stay
Base in Porto for the golf and the city both, with the riverside Ribeira and the Foz coast the two strongest neighborhoods, then add a night or two out of town for the scenery. The Vidago Palace is a destination in itself, a restored Belle Epoque grand hotel with the course on its doorstep, and the Douro wine quintas above Pinhao make an unforgettable detour between rounds.
For a coast focused trip, Espinho and Esposende put you on the links, while Amarante and Ponte de Lima reward a slower, inland pace with old towns, river beaches and the best food in the north.

Porto golf questions
Is Porto a good golf destination?
Yes, for golfers who want something different from the Algarve. Oporto Golf Club, founded by British residents in 1890, is one of the oldest courses in continental Europe, the coast adds the links at Estela, and the green Minho and Douro hills hide Amarante, Ponte de Lima and the Belle Epoque spa course at Vidago Palace. It pairs beautifully with the city, the river and the port lodges.
