Costa Palmas

Golf on the East Cape, the quiet side of Los Cabos. When Robert Trent Jones II opened Costa Palmas in 2019 he gave Baja something it had never had, a links-inspired course you can walk, laid out along the calm Sea of Cortez and anchored by a Four Seasons resort. It is the most distinctive new golf in the region.

The verdict

Most of the famous Los Cabos golf sits on the dramatic, surf battered Pacific side of the cape, where the ocean is a spectacle but rarely a calm one. Costa Palmas does something different. It is on the East Cape, near La Ribera, where the Sea of Cortez is sheltered and swimmable, and Robert Trent Jones II used that softer setting to build a course with a links sensibility rather than the target golf that defines so much of Baja. Opened in November 2019, it was the first championship course to land on this less travelled stretch of coast.

At a par 72 of about 7,221 yards it has the length for a strong game, but the more telling number is how easily it walks. The routing keeps short, natural transitions between greens and the next tee, and a proper caddie programme supports walking rather than the cart bound circuit common elsewhere in Cabo. Framed by coastal desert, arroyos and low dunes, with the calm sea never far away, it is a thinking, breathing golf course and a genuine reason to choose the East Cape.

The holes worth the trip

What sets Costa Palmas apart is the ground game. The fairways are generous and firm, the contours feed the ball, and the wind off the Sea of Cortez is a steadier, more strategic partner than the gusts that hammer the Pacific courses. Jones routed the holes to use the natural arroyos and the dune ridges as hazards and framing, so the challenge is more about reading the land and choosing the right line than carrying forced water over and over.

The closing stretch brings the sea into play and lifts the round to a finish worthy of the setting, while the interior holes work through the coastal desert with the Sierra de la Laguna mountains rising behind. Because it walks so well, with a caddie at your side, the rhythm is closer to a great seaside course than a desert resort layout, and that rhythm is exactly what regular travellers to Cabo tell us they have been missing.

Add in the conditioning expected of a Four Seasons course and a calm, swimmable beach a short stroll from the clubhouse, and Costa Palmas becomes a destination in its own right rather than one stop on a Cabo cart tour. For golfers who already know Quivira and the Cabo del Sol courses, it is the freshest and most walkable test in the region.

Where to stay nearby

The natural base is the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, which sits within the same gated community as the golf course and is the route to a tee time for visitors. Staying there puts the course, the marina and a rare calm, swimmable beach all within the grounds, which is the whole appeal of the East Cape over the busier Tourist Corridor.

For a wider Los Cabos trip you can pair a few days on the East Cape with the Pacific side, where the famous resort courses cluster around San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, roughly an hour's drive away. That split, calm and walkable at Costa Palmas, dramatic and cart bound on the Pacific, makes for a varied and memorable Baja golf week.
