Quivira Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus course on the Pacific cliffs at the tip of the Baja Peninsula in Cabo San Lucas
Course profile · Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Quivira Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus called the land the most dramatic he had ever worked with, and it is hard to argue. Quivira occupies the very tip of Baja, where the desert, the granite cliffs and the Pacific meet, and Nicklaus routed all eighteen holes with ocean views, more oceanfront than any other course in Los Cabos. It is golf as spectacle, played from clifftop tees hundreds of feet above the surf.

The verdict

Quivira is the most spectacular course in a destination full of them. Opened in 2014 for the Pueblo Bonito resorts, it sits at the western tip of the Baja Peninsula in Cabo San Lucas, on a tract of clifftop, dune and desert that Jack Nicklaus stitched together into a par 72 of around 7,085 yards. The headline statistic is the oceanfront, more than any other course in Los Cabos, with the Pacific in view from all eighteen holes.

It is a thrill ride more than a championship grind. The routing climbs to vertiginous clifftop tees, plunges back to the beach and runs long stretches of cart path between the holes, where comfort stations stocked with food and drink keep you fuelled. The golf is enjoyable rather than brutal, but the views are relentless, and in winter the swells below carry breaching whales. For drama and photographs, few rounds anywhere compete. Best of all as part of a Pueblo Bonito stay, with the rest of the Los Cabos courses a short drive away.

The holes worth the trip

The early stretch sets the tone, climbing into the cliffs above the Pacific. The par 4 fifth is the most photographed shot on the course, a tee shot played from a perch high on the granite headland with the ocean crashing far below, the kind of hole golfers travel to Los Cabos to play.

From there Quivira tumbles through dunes and desert arroyos back toward the sea, with several greens set on the very edge of the beach and the surf as a backdrop. The comfort stations between holes, lavishly stocked, are part of the experience, a nod to the long transitions across the rugged terrain. Off the tee the corridors are generous enough to keep the round enjoyable, so the test is more about choosing the right club into wind off the water than surviving a brute.

It is a course to savour rather than wrestle. Take a cart, take the camera, and time a winter round to catch the whales breaching off the cliffs. As a piece of pure coastal theatre, Quivira has few equals in the Americas.
