Mont Choisy Le Golf
Peter Matkovich turned a former sugar cane estate near Grand Baie into the first 18 hole course in the north of Mauritius, officially opened in October 2017. A par 72 championship layout of 6,245 meters with wide playing corridors, volcanic stone walls and year round conditioning, it gave the island's liveliest corner the serious golf it was missing.

The verdict
For decades the golf in Mauritius lived on the east and southwest coasts while the buzzing north, home of Grand Baie's beaches, restaurants and nightlife, had nothing of championship standard. Mont Choisy Le Golf fixed that. Peter Matkovich, the South African architect behind several of the island's best courses, routed a par 72 of 6,245 meters through the old Mont Choisy sugar estate, keeping the long views to the mountains, preserving the historic stone walls and planting thousands of indigenous trees as the cane retreated.
The result is the most playable serious course on the island. Fairways are wide and firm, the bunkering is generous to the bogey golfer but punishing to the careless line, and the large greens reward a properly flighted approach. Because it sits ten minutes from the hotels of Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches, it is also the most convenient round in Mauritius for anyone basing in the north. For a first golf trip to the island, Mont Choisy belongs on the rotation alongside Anahita and Heritage Le Chateau.

The holes worth the trip
Matkovich's routing uses the estate's gentle slope cleverly, so the course drains fast after tropical rain and the ball runs on firm Bermuda turf. The opening holes play away through corridors of young indigenous forest, with the old volcanic stone walls of the sugar estate cutting across several fairways as both hazard and history.
The strongest stretch comes mid round, where a pair of long par 4s turn into the trade winds and demand two committed swings, followed by a short par 3 over broken ground where anything underhit feeds away into collection areas. The par 5s are genuine three shot decisions for most visitors, each offering a safe route wide and a shorter line over sand for the brave.
The closing run swings back toward the contemporary clubhouse with the Moka mountains on the skyline, finishing with an approach over water that keeps the card honest to the last swing. It is resort golf in the best sense: beautiful, fair, quick to walk or ride, and difficult exactly where a good course should be.

Where to stay nearby
The north is the most convenient base. Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches put the course ten minutes away and surround you with the island's best restaurants, beach clubs and boat trips, ideal for groups where not everyone plays. Beachcomber's northern resorts partner directly with Mont Choisy Le Golf, and their unlimited golf packages are the simplest way to build a week around the course.
Golfers chasing variety can split the stay: four nights in the north for Mont Choisy, then three on the east coast for Anahita or in the south for the Heritage estate and La Reserve Golf Links, the island's newest marquee layout. Transfers run about an hour between coasts, easy to schedule around an afternoon at leisure.
