When to Play Golf in Mauritius

Mauritius sells itself as a year round golf island, and it nearly is. But the island has two distinct seasons, a cyclone window, and a windy coast, and the difference between a flawless week at La Reserve Golf Links and a stormy one is mostly a question of dates. Here is the honest month by month picture, with the windows we book for our own trips.

The short answer

Book May to October for the most dependable golf, and September to October if you can choose freely. That is the southern winter: dry, sunny days in the mid 20s Celsius, low humidity and firm surfaces, ideal for walking the island's flagship courses. The one caveat is wind. The southeast trades blow hardest in July and August, when the east coast courses play seriously gusty and the west and north of the island are the calmer bet.

November and December are warm, greener and still very playable, and the festive season is popular despite the humidity. The window to treat with care is January to March: cyclone season, hot and humid, with the highest chance of storm disrupted days. Golf happens all summer, and rates soften, but if you are flying eleven plus hours for a once a year trip, the winter window is the one to book.

The dry season, and why it wins

Mauritius sits in the southern hemisphere, so its winter runs from May to October, and that is when the island golfs best. Days settle into the mid 20s Celsius, humidity drops, rain becomes an occasional visitor rather than a daily threat, and the courses firm up underfoot. This is the season to walk La Reserve Golf Links at Heritage Bel Ombre, the Louis Oosthuizen co designed links that Golfweek ranks the No. 1 course in Africa, and to take on the island's resort parkland at Heritage Le Chateau and Belle Mare's Legend course in genuinely comfortable weather.

Within the winter, the months differ. May and June are the freshest, with the landscape still green from the summer rains. July and August are the coolest and driest, but they bring the strongest southeast trade winds of the year, which matters more in Mauritius than most destinations because several of the headline courses, Anahita and the Ile aux Cerfs island course among them, sit on the exposed east coast. In midwinter we route groups to the west and north, where Tamarina and Mont Choisy sit in the lee of the island, and save the east coast for the calmer months. September and October are the payoff: warm, settled, lighter winds, every coast in play. If we could book only one fortnight in Mauritius, it would fall in those two months.

Summer, cyclones and the value play

Summer, November to April, is hotter, stickier and greener, with most of the island's rain. The serious caveat is the cyclone season, which peaks from January to March. Direct hits are rare, but storm systems passing near the island can bring days of wind and rain, and no green fee is worth planning around in that window without flexibility. December remains popular for the festive season, and November is arguably the smartest value month of the year: still settled more often than not, with softer rates and quieter tee sheets before the holidays.

Two practical notes for any season. First, tropical golf is morning golf; tee off early for the calmest wind and the kindest heat, whatever the month. Second, the resort system shapes the cost: most flagship courses attach to hotels, and staying at the right one, Heritage Bel Ombre for the Heritage courses, Anahita or Shangri La Le Touessrok on the east coast, converts rack rate green fees into package golf. Our Mauritius green fee guide breaks down the numbers course by course, and the Mauritius destination guide covers where to base yourself coast by coast.

Mauritius season questions

What is the best month to play golf in Mauritius?

September and October are the prime months: warm, dry days around the mid 20s Celsius, lighter winds than midwinter and firm playing surfaces before the summer humidity returns. May and June are nearly as good. If you want the calmest combination of weather and availability across the whole island, book September or October and reserve tee times ahead. Always confirm directly before booking.

Can you play golf in Mauritius in cyclone season?

Yes, golf is played year round, but January to March is the hot, humid cyclone season, with the highest chance of storms and disrupted days. Many traveling golfers still go in December and early January for the holiday season; just build flexibility into the itinerary and accept that an afternoon storm can wash out a round. The driest, most dependable golf runs from May to October.

Which side of Mauritius is windiest for golf?

The east coast. The southeast trade winds blow hardest from July to August, and east coast courses such as Anahita and the Ile aux Cerfs island course feel them most. In midwinter, golfers who prefer calmer conditions favor courses in the west and north, such as Tamarina and Mont Choisy, which sit in the lee of the island.

How much are green fees in Mauritius in 2026?

Indicative 2026 fees at the flagship courses run from roughly 110 to 175 euro per round. Heritage Golf Club fees run around 110 to 150 euro, Anahita around 125 to 175 euro, and Mont Choisy is around Rs 6,500, roughly 150 euro, with a cart included. Hotel guests at the attached resorts often pay reduced or package rates. Fees move by season, so always confirm directly before booking.
