Heritage Le Château

Peter Matkovich's championship course tumbles across the Bel Ombre estate on the wild south coast of Mauritius, from forested hillside down toward the Indian Ocean. Opened in 2004, this par 72 has hosted European tour golf and remains the island's most respected test, played among mango trees, lakes and views that run from mountain to reef.

The verdict

Mauritius is one of the great long haul golf escapes, and Le Château is the course that anchors it. Peter Matkovich, a designer who knows tropical terrain as well as anyone, routed the championship eighteen across the vast Bel Ombre estate when it opened in 2004, and the result is far more than a pretty resort layout. It climbs into the forested foothills, swoops back down toward the coast, and has been trusted with European tour and seniors events, which tells you it stands up under pressure.

The pleasure here is variety. One stretch plays through dense subtropical woodland with elevation changes you do not expect on an island course, another opens out toward water and the distant reef. It asks for real shotmaking and a head for the heat, then rewards you with a setting, and a clubhouse in a restored 19th century château, that few courses on earth can match. Come for the island, leave respecting the golf.

The holes worth the trip

The round makes the most of the estate's range of land. Early holes run through mature subtropical forest, where mango and other native trees frame tight, tree lined corridors and the elevation change keeps you guessing on club selection. It is golf that asks for discipline and a controlled fade or draw rather than a one shape bludgeon.

As the course works toward the coast it opens up, with lakes, generous landing zones and longer views toward the mountains and the Indian Ocean. The par 5s give the bold a chance, while the strong par 4s and a fine set of par 3s make sure the card is honestly earned. The contrast between the wooded high ground and the open lower holes is what makes the eighteen feel like a proper journey.

It is a course that flatters good play and quietly punishes the careless, with greens that are quick and true and run offs that demand a sharp short game. Play it early before the heat builds and you get the best of both the conditions and the views.

Where to stay nearby

The simplest plan is to stay on the Bel Ombre estate itself, where the Heritage resort collection includes beachfront five star hotels and a private villa enclave, all with golf access folded into the stay. It puts the course, the spa, the beach and a clutch of restaurants within a short buggy ride, which is exactly what a long haul golf trip should feel like.

For variety, the wider south and west coasts of Mauritius hold more luxury resorts and a second Heritage course, La Réserve Golf Links, so a week here can mix two strong layouts with diving, hiking in the nearby national park and the slow pleasures of island life.
