The grande dame of Algarve golf and a former host of the Portuguese Open, a handsome, tree lined course running through the pines and lakes of the upmarket Quinta do Lago resort. Strong, fair and beautifully kept, with the famous par 3 over water on the back nine, it is the natural anchor of a central Algarve base with bars, restaurants and lodging on the doorstep.
The best course near Lisbon and a genuine links among the umbrella pines and dunes above the Atlantic at Cascais. Arthur Hills routed it to use the wind off the sea as the main defence, and it has hosted the Portuguese Open more than once. A round here, paired with a night in lively Cascais, is the highlight of a Lisbon based buddies week.
Long rated among the very best in Portugal, a Joseph Lee design winding through the Ria Formosa nature reserve with two memorable closing holes along the estuary. Access has historically run through the resort hotels, which makes it feel like a treat, and the quality rewards the effort. A big, bold modern links on the Silver Coast north of Lisbon, laid by Cynthia Dye across rolling dunes above the Atlantic with huge ocean views from almost every hole. Dramatic, exposed and a real test in the wind, it is the standout of the Silver Coast cluster and a thrilling group round for players who like their golf with scenery and bite.
A Cabell Robinson design that mixes pine framed parkland holes with a stretch of true linksland on the dunes by the sea, the long established anchor of the Silver Coast. Generous enough for a mixed group yet strong from the back tees, with a resort that sleeps a large party in one place, it pairs perfectly with neighbouring West Cliffs for a two course base.
The classic Algarve buddies round, a mature Frank Pennink layout threading the umbrella pines in the heart of Vilamoura, the marina town built for golf groups. It will not overpower a higher handicapper, the value is good, and the marina with its bars and restaurants sits a short walk from the eighteenth, which is exactly what a group base needs.
A tough, pure links on a sandy peninsula across the bay from Setubal, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr and reachable by ferry from the Lisbon side. Tight, exposed and demanding, it is a course for the better players in the group and a striking change of pace, easily added to a Lisbon coast trip for a wilder day by the Atlantic.
