The Best Golf Courses Near Lisbon

Lisbon is the underrated golf city of Iberia: a clutch of genuinely excellent courses spread along the Cascais and Estoril coast, up into the Sintra hills and across the Tagus to the Troia peninsula, all within an hour of one of Europe's most enjoyable capitals. You can play links by the Atlantic in the morning and dine in the city at night. Here are the seven courses we rate most highly near Lisbon, ranked.

How we chose them

We judged each course on design quality, condition and setting, and on how it fits a Lisbon trip that pairs golf with the city and the coast. The Lisbon golf coast covers four pockets: the Cascais and Estoril seafront to the west, the wooded Sintra hills above it, the pine forests of Caparica and Sesimbra to the south, and the wild Troia peninsula across the river. Praia del Rey sits a little further north toward Obidos but is too good to leave off.

Every designer, opening year and detail here was checked at the time of writing against club sources, and each course links to its full profile. The order and the verdicts are ours. The ranking

01

Oitavos Dunes

Arthur Hills, 2001 · Cascais · par 71

The best course near Lisbon and one of the finest in Portugal, an Arthur Hills design laid through umbrella pine and natural dune inside the Sintra Cascais Natural Park, with the Atlantic and the Sintra hills in view. It plays as a true links over sandy ground, firm, breezy and strategic, and has long featured on lists of Europe's best. Environmentally certified and beautifully kept, it is the round to build a Lisbon golf trip around.

02

Penha Longa Atlantic Course

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 1992 · Sintra · par 72

A dramatic Robert Trent Jones Jr layout in the wooded hills of Sintra, set on a historic estate around a luxury resort. The Atlantic Course rolls over steep, scenic terrain with mountain and ocean views, and has hosted the Portuguese Open more than once. It is a genuine championship test attached to a five star hotel, which makes it the obvious choice for a group that wants top golf and a comfortable base in one place.

03

Praia del Rey

Cabell Robinson, 1997 · Obidos coast, about an hour north · par 72

A superb Cabell Robinson course on the Silver Coast about an hour north of Lisbon, where dunes and pine give way to clifftop holes above the Atlantic. The seaside stretch plays as pure links, exposed to the wind, while the inland holes wind through woodland, and the variety and quality have earned it a regular place among Portugal's best. Worth the drive, or a fine anchor for a Silver Coast leg of a longer trip.

04

Troia Golf

Robert Trent Jones Sr, 1980 · Troia peninsula, south of the Tagus · par 72

A real connoisseur's links on the sandy Troia peninsula across the river, reached by a short ferry from Setubal. Robert Trent Jones Sr routed it through dunes and pine in 1980 and built one of the toughest, purest links tests in the country, long admired by good players for its honesty and its setting between the Sado estuary and the sea. A standout for golfers who want a stern, traditional round away from the resorts.

05

Quinta da Marinha

Robert Trent Jones Sr, 1984 · Cascais · par 71

A relaxed, scenic Robert Trent Jones Sr course on the edge of Cascais, set among pines and villas with glimpses of the sea and the Sintra hills. It is shorter and gentler than the courses above, well kept and welcoming, and attached to a comfortable resort, which makes it an easy, enjoyable round for a mixed group and a natural base right on the coast minutes from Cascais town.

06

Aroeira Pines (Aroeira I)

Frank Pennink, 1972 · Costa da Caparica, south of Lisbon · par 72

A handsome, mature parkland course in the cool pine forest of Caparica, just south of the city across the bridge. Frank Pennink's 1972 layout, the older of the two Aroeira courses, is famous for its umbrella pines and tight, tree lined fairways, a quieter, shaded test that has hosted the Portuguese Open. A lovely change of character from the coastal links and easy to combine with a city stay.

07

Belas Clube de Campo

Rocky Roquemore, 1997 · in the hills northwest of Lisbon · par 72

A long, rolling Rocky Roquemore course set in a green valley in the hills behind Lisbon, the closest of the leading courses to the airport and the city. It plays over big, undulating terrain with generous fairways and a real sense of space, and offers good value and quiet tee sheets. A solid, enjoyable round to round out a week, especially for groups based in the city rather than on the coast.

Golf near Lisbon: questions

What is the best golf course near Lisbon?

Oitavos Dunes near Cascais, an Arthur Hills design that opened in 2001, is widely rated the best course near Lisbon and one of the finest in Portugal, a links style layout running through pine and dune inside the Sintra Cascais Natural Park. Penha Longa's Atlantic Course in Sintra, by Robert Trent Jones Jr, and the coastal Praia del Rey north of the city are the next calls.

How many golf courses are near Lisbon?

Within roughly an hour of central Lisbon there are around a dozen quality courses, clustered along the Cascais and Estoril coast to the west, in the Sintra hills, on the Caparica and Sesimbra side to the south, and across the river on the Troia peninsula. Praia del Rey sits about an hour north toward Obidos. It is enough variety to fill a full week from a single city or coastal base.

Can you play golf in Lisbon and visit the city?

Yes, and it is one of the destination's great strengths. Most of the courses are 30 to 60 minutes from central Lisbon, and the Cascais and Estoril coast offers beaches, restaurants and easy train links to the city, so a group can play strong golf in the morning and enjoy Lisbon or the coast in the afternoon. It suits couples and mixed groups as well as dedicated golfers.

When is the best time to play golf near Lisbon?

Lisbon golf plays well most of the year thanks to a mild Atlantic climate. Spring, March to May, and autumn, September to October, give the best mix of warm, settled weather and green courses. Summer is hot but tempered by the sea breeze on the coast, and winter is mild and good value though wetter. The coastal courses can be breezy in the afternoon. Always confirm seasonal conditions before booking.
