The Best Golf Courses on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast
Costa Rica's Pacific coast holds only a handful of championship courses, and that scarcity is the point. Arnold Palmer and Robert Trent Jones Jr built ocean golf in Guanacaste's dry northwest, Mike Young went wild on a former cattle ranch near Tamarindo, and Ted Robinson Jr carved a round out of central Pacific rainforest. How we chose
This is a short list because the coast has a short list. We ranked every real championship course on Costa Rica's Pacific shore, from the Papagayo peninsula in the far northwest down to Herradura on the central Pacific, and we left out the Central Valley clubs around San Jose, including the historic Cariari Country Club, because an hour and a half inland is not the coast. The GolfForKings editorial desk weighed the architecture, the strength of the ocean and jungle settings, the conditioning through the seasons, and the access truth: two of these four give priority to resort guests, and we say so plainly rather than pretend a tee time is a formality.

The four best, ranked
Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Ocean Course
The finest golf in Central America and the reason most traveling golfers come to Costa Rica at all. Palmer's Ocean Course climbs and plunges across a narrow peninsula between two bays, with the Pacific in view from the great majority of holes and howler monkeys providing the gallery. Long listed among Golf Digest's best courses outside the United States, it pairs genuine architectural drama with Four Seasons polish. The catch is absolute: play is reserved for members and registered guests staying on Peninsula Papagayo, so the round must be built around the stay. Reserva Conchal, Garra de Leon
The strongest pure test on the coast that a visitor can realistically book. Robert Trent Jones Jr routed Garra de Leon, the lion's claw, through tropical dry forest above the shell beach at Playa Conchal, with rolling greens, sixty bunkers and conditioning that has held Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary certification for more than two decades. The Westin and the wider Reserva Conchal estate feed the tee sheet, and guests get priority and the best rates, so advance booking is essential for anyone staying off the property. Hacienda Pinilla
The sternest and most natural golf in the country. Mike Young spread 7,300 yards across a former cattle ranch south of Tamarindo, running through dry forest and out to a raw stretch of coastline at Playa Avellanas, and in the dry season the ground plays with a firmness that is honestly described as links like. There is a JW Marriott on the estate, but Pinilla keeps the most open door of the Guanacaste trio and is the round for golfers who want length, wind and wildness rather than resort manicure. It also holds Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status. Green fees move with the season; confirm with the club directly.

La Iguana at Los Suenos Marriott
The best golf on the central Pacific and the most purely tropical round of the four. La Iguana is carved through dense rainforest in a sheltered cove at Herradura near Jaco, about ninety minutes from San Jose, and the wildlife is not a brochure line: toucans, scarlet macaws, iguanas and troops of monkeys cross the round. The golf is shorter and tighter than the open Guanacaste courses, all angles and jungle walls, and it suits a trip based near the capital or one that pairs golf with the marlin fishing fleet at Los Suenos.
