The Best Golf Courses in Costa Rica

Costa Rica's golf is small in number but rich in setting, with championship courses by Arnold Palmer and Robert Trent Jones junior tumbling down to the Pacific in Guanacaste, monkeys in the trees and the ocean on the horizon. Our ranked five, with verdicts and how to play them.

How we ranked them

Costa Rica will never be a high volume golf destination, and that is part of the appeal. The best courses are gathered on the dry, sunny Pacific coast of Guanacaste in the northwest, with one outlier near the capital and another on the central Pacific. What sets them apart is the wildlife and the scenery as much as the architecture, white faced monkeys crossing fairways, scarlet macaws overhead, the surf within earshot. We weighed the quality and conditioning of the golf, the strength of the setting and its lodging, how easily a visiting group can get on, and the pedigree of the design.

Every fact here, the designers, the opening years and the indicative green fees, was checked at the time of writing in June 2026 by the GolfForKings editorial desk. Fees move with the season and the year, so treat the numbers as a guide and always confirm directly before booking. The verdicts are ours. If your group wants any of these built into a costed itinerary, with the flights, the transfers and the right resort secured, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The 5 best golf courses in Costa Rica

1

Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, the Arnold Palmer course

Arnold Palmer, 2004 · Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste

The finest golf in the country and one of the great resort courses of Central America, an Arnold Palmer design that climbs and falls across a narrow peninsula with the Pacific in view on the great majority of holes. Long listed among Golf Digest's best courses outside the United States, it pairs world class scenery and wildlife with the polish of the Four Seasons. The undisputed number one and the reason most golfers come.

2

Reserva Conchal, Garra de Leon

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 1996 · Playa Conchal, Guanacaste

A Robert Trent Jones junior design, recently renamed Garra de Leon, set between tropical dry forest and the famous shell beach at Playa Conchal. Several holes run toward the ocean and the conditioning is among the best in the country, served by the Westin and the wider Reserva Conchal estate. A worthy second and an easy pairing with Papagayo on a Guanacaste week.

3

Hacienda Pinilla

Mike Young, 2001 · Playa Langosta, Guanacaste

A Mike Young layout sprawling across a former cattle ranch near Tamarindo, rugged and wild in character with dry forest, rolling hills and a stretch of coastline. Longer and more exposed than the manicured resort courses, it has a links like firmness in the dry season and is the pick for golfers who want a sterner, more natural test on the Guanacaste coast.

4

Los Suenos Marriott, La Iguana

Ted Robinson Jr, 2000 · Herradura, central Pacific

The best golf on the central Pacific, a Ted Robinson junior design carved through dense rainforest in a sheltered cove near Jaco, a short drive from San Jose. Toucans, monkeys and iguanas share the course, and the jungle setting feels a world apart from the open Guanacaste links. The natural choice for a trip based closer to the capital or paired with sport fishing at Los Suenos.

5

Cariari Country Club

George Fazio, 1970s · near San Jose, Central Valley

The grand old course of Costa Rican golf, a mature George Fazio parkland in the cooler Central Valley near the international airport that has hosted professional events for decades. Tree lined and traditional rather than scenic in the coastal sense, it is the obvious round for an arrival or departure day in San Jose and a piece of the country's golf history.

Designers and opening years verified June 2026 by the GolfForKings editorial desk. Costa Rican golf is concentrated in Guanacaste, with a round each near San Jose and on the central Pacific. Always confirm visitor access and fees directly before booking.

Where they are, and indicative costs

Costa Rican golf splits into three areas. The strongest by far is Guanacaste in the dry northwest, where Four Seasons Papagayo, Reserva Conchal and Hacienda Pinilla sit within an hour or so of Liberia airport and the main beach resorts. The central Pacific around Herradura and Jaco holds Los Suenos, roughly ninety minutes from the capital. Cariari sits in the Central Valley by San Jose, handy for arrival and departure. Most trips fly into Liberia, base in Guanacaste for the headline rounds, and add a central Pacific or Central Valley round if time allows.
