Why golf in Danang and central Vietnam

Central Vietnam has become the best golf destination in the country and one of the most exciting in Asia, a coast where the championship courses were all built in the last two decades and the signatures read like a who's who of modern design. Within about an hour of Danang airport you can play a Greg Norman links beside the sand, a Jack Nicklaus course on the same resort, a Nick Faldo layout below the Annamite mountains and the Robert Trent Jones II course that was named the best new course in the world the year it opened. The Vietnam Golf Coast association ties roughly seven championship courses together into a single, easily toured cluster.

What makes it more than just good golf is the setting. Danang's long beach, the lantern lit old town of Hoi An a few miles south, the imperial city of Hue to the north and the food, the value and the genuine warmth of the welcome give the non golfing days as much to do as the rounds themselves. Add fast, comfortable resorts and direct flights from across Asia and you have a destination that suits a serious golf trip and a couples or family holiday with golf folded in, all without the price tag of the more established Asian resorts.

How to think about a central Vietnam golf trip

Danang and the beach

The hub, with BRG Danang's two championship courses and the Montgomerie Links a few minutes from the long city beach, the airport and a wall of beach resorts.

Hoi An to the south

The RTJ II course at Hoiana Shores and Vinpearl Nam Hoi An sit beside the lantern lit old town, a UNESCO gem that turns the evenings into an event.

Lang Co to the north

Nick Faldo's Laguna Lang Co spreads below the Annamite mountains near a three kilometre beach, an hour north toward Hue and a quieter, resort led base.

The courses that matter

Hoiana Shores

Robert Trent Jones II, 2019

The first Robert Trent Jones II course in Vietnam and the critical favourite, a true links beside the South China Sea south of Hoi An that was named World's Best New Golf Course in 2020. Firm, sandy and wind exposed, it brings genuine links character to the tropics and anchors the smart Hoiana resort.

BRG Danang Dunes Course

Greg Norman, 2010

The Greg Norman designed Dunes course, with lead architect Harley Kruse, was the course that put Danang on the golf map, a links style layout among coastal dunes a short drive from the city beach. Floodlit for evening play and consistently rated among the best in Vietnam, it pairs with the resort's newer Nicklaus course.

BRG Danang Nicklaus Course

Jack Nicklaus Design

The second course at BRG Danang, a Jack Nicklaus design that gives the resort a genuine 36 hole offer beside the sand. Two contrasting championship layouts on one site make this the most convenient base for a golf focused stay close to the airport and the beach.

Laguna Lang Co

Nick Faldo · Par 71

A Nick Faldo design about an hour north of Danang, set on a dramatic plain between the Annamite mountains, a river and a three kilometre beach near Lang Co Bay. Routed to use the natural land and water, it is one of the most scenic rounds in the country and the heart of a self contained Banyan Tree and Angsana resort.

Montgomerie Links

Colin Montgomerie · Par 72 · 7,090 yards

A Colin Montgomerie design just off Danang beach and minutes from the city, a links style course over rolling, sandy terrain that was one of the first international standard layouts on the coast. Central, walkable and a reliable inclusion on any Danang itinerary.

Ba Na Hills Golf Club

Mountain course, Danang hinterland

An IMG and Luke Donald associated mountain course in the forested hills west of Danang, a complete change of scenery from the coastal links and a host of Asian Tour events. Cooler, dramatic and a strong contrast round to break up a week of seaside golf.

Getting there and around

Danang International Airport sits in the middle of the coast and takes direct flights from across East and Southeast Asia, with onward connections through Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the regional hubs. It is one of the easiest golf coasts in Asia to reach and to get around, as the courses, the beach resorts and Hoi An all lie within an hour of the terminal. Most golf trips run on private transfers or a driver, which is inexpensive and removes any worry about local traffic, and the resorts run shuttles to the beach and the old town. Laguna Lang Co to the north and Hoiana to the south are the longest hops, both comfortably under an hour.

Where to stay

The classic base is the Danang beach strip, a wall of international resorts a few minutes from the airport, BRG Danang and the Montgomerie Links, with easy runs to both Hoi An and Lang Co. For a quieter, more self contained trip, the Hoiana resort south of Hoi An puts you on the RTJ II course and beside the lantern lit old town, while Laguna Lang Co to the north is a resort world of its own below the mountains. Many golfers split the week, a few nights on Danang beach and a few at Hoiana or Lang Co, to see the whole coast and play every signature course.
