From the Ryder Cup theatre of Valderrama to the value of the Golf Valley, ranked with our verdicts and the reasons to take the group there.
01
Real Club Valderrama
Sotogrande · Robert Trent Jones, 1985 · bucket list
The most famous course on the coast and usually rated the best in Spain, the Robert Trent Jones design that hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup and years of Volvo Masters drama. Tight, tree lined and ferociously bunkered, with the cork oaks and the fearsome par 5 17th. A pricey, private members club, but the round every Costa del Sol group dreams of. The headline play of the trip.
02
Finca Cortesin
Casares · Cabell Robinson, 2006 · resort
Host of the 2023 Solheim Cup and the most spectacular modern course on the coast, a long, sweeping Cabell Robinson layout that stretches to nearly 7,000 metres from the tips. Immaculate, generous off the tee and genuinely thrilling, with a five star hotel attached for groups who want to do it in style. The western Costa del Sol showpiece and a must on any serious trip.
03
Real Club de Golf Las Brisas
Nueva Andalucia, Marbella · Robert Trent Jones, 1968 · private
The jewel of Marbella's Golf Valley, another Robert Trent Jones design, all water, white sand bunkers and slick greens in the hills above Puerto Banus. Demanding and beautifully kept, it sits at the heart of the densest cluster of courses on the coast, which makes it the ideal centerpiece for a Marbella based group week with the nightlife a short taxi away.
04
Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
Sotogrande · Robert Trent Jones, 1964 · private
The course that started Costa del Sol golf, Robert Trent Jones's first design in Europe and still one of his finest, a mature, elegant parkland of cork oaks, palms and water just along the coast from Valderrama. Less brutal than its neighbor and a pure pleasure to play, it is the classicist's pick in Sotogrande and a perfect pairing with a Valderrama round.
05
La Reserva Club Sotogrande
Sotogrande · Cabell Robinson, 2003 · resort
A modern Cabell Robinson course high in the Sotogrande hills, with sweeping sea views, big elevation changes and a polished, group friendly clubhouse and beach club. More forgiving than the Sotogrande classics and a lot of fun for a mixed handicap group, it completes a brilliant western trio and is one of the easier marquee tee times to secure.
06
Los Naranjos Golf Club
Nueva Andalucia, Marbella · Robert Trent Jones, 1977 · resort
A Golf Valley favorite and one of the most reliable group rounds on the coast, a Robert Trent Jones parkland of orange groves, water and generous fairways right beside Las Brisas. Excellent conditioning, a buzzing clubhouse and an easy walk make it a course groups return to year after year. The everyday quality round that anchors a Marbella week.
07
La Cala Resort
Mijas · Cabell Robinson · stay and play
The largest golf resort in Spain, with three Cabell Robinson mountain courses, a hotel, a spa and group facilities all on one estate above Mijas. Not the most exclusive golf on this list, but for a self contained buddies trip where everyone stays and plays in one place, it is the simplest, best value base on the coast. Bookable and built for groups.
08
The Marbella Golf Valley cluster
Nueva Andalucia · resort · value
The engine room of a Marbella trip. Aloha, the classic Javier Arana course, La Quinta with its three nine hole loops, and Guadalmina and Magna nearby give a group a stack of good, well priced rounds within a few minutes of one another and the Puerto Banus nightlife. This is where the value lives and where most of the golf gets played between the marquee days.
