Ayrshire vs East Lothian: Which Golf Trip Wins?

Scotland's two great links coasts face each other across the country like rival claims on the same inheritance. Ayrshire, in the west, holds three Open venues inside half an hour: Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry. East Lothian, east of Edinburgh, answers with Muirfield, North Berwick and the deepest run of links golf per mile anywhere on earth. We have priced both at 2026 rates, and the verdict turns on what kind of golfer is paying.

The verdict

East Lothian, for most traveling groups. The arithmetic is hard to argue with: along 20 miles of coast east of Edinburgh sit Muirfield, the best course in Scotland by many sober judgments, North Berwick, the most charming links in the world and home of the original Redan, Gullane No 1 at around 175 pounds, plus Dunbar, Luffness New, Craigielaw, Kilspindie and the Renaissance Club, host of the Scottish Open. A week here never repeats itself, the fees average far below the Open venue circuit, and Edinburgh, one of Europe's great cities, is the base.

Ayrshire is the counterargument for the golfer collecting the game's history. Nowhere else can you play the birthplace of The Open at Prestwick, the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon and the lighthouse run at Turnberry's Ailsa inside 30 minutes of each other, with Western Gailes and Dundonald as the supporting links. The catch is the bill: Turnberry's 2026 peak fee touches 1,000 pounds. For Open romantics it is worth every penny once. For everyone else, the east coast simply offers more golf for the money.

Who should pick which

Pick Ayrshire if...

The Open is the point. Walking Prestwick's blind Alps hole where the championship began in 1860, hitting the 123 yard Postage Stamp with something between a wedge and a prayer, then playing the Ailsa's lighthouse stretch where Watson and Nicklaus dueled in 1977: that is a pilgrimage no other coast can sell, and it fits inside a long weekend. Stay at the Turnberry resort to halve the Ailsa fee, use Dundonald and Western Gailes to bring the average down, and accept that this is the expensive west wing of Scottish golf. Our 5 day Ayrshire itinerary shows the shape of it.

Pick East Lothian if...

You want the best week of links golf available anywhere for the money. The honest structure: Gullane No 1 to open, North Berwick for the day you will retell forever, Muirfield on the Tuesday or Thursday you booked a season ahead, then Dunbar or Luffness New while the rest of the group plays the village putting green at North Berwick with a pint. Base in Gullane, North Berwick or Edinburgh itself and the trip needs one hotel and no long drives. See our guide to getting on Muirfield and the full East Lothian ranking.

Either way, the two coasts are only about 90 minutes apart by road, so a nine or ten day Scottish swing can take both, and our Scotland green fee guide, Ayrshire guide, East Lothian guide and Turnberry vs Royal Troon head to head fill in the detail.

Ayrshire vs East Lothian questions

Which is easier to reach, Ayrshire or East Lothian?

East Lothian, narrowly. Its courses sit 30 to 45 minutes from Edinburgh and its airport, with the city's hotels and restaurants as the base. Ayrshire is about 40 minutes from Glasgow, with Glasgow Prestwick beside the links themselves; the trade is fewer base town options, with Troon, Ayr and the Turnberry resort the usual choices.
