Who this trip suits

Scotland is the bucket list golf trip, and it suits the group that wants the history as much as the golf: buddies trips ticking off the Open rota, fathers and sons, and serious players who will accept the wind as part of the test. It is walking golf on ancient turf, so a reasonable level of fitness and a sense of humor about the weather both help.

Fife is the natural base for a first visit: the Old Course, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie sit within a short drive of one another, and St Andrews town gives you somewhere to eat and sleep with character. Return visitors push north to Dornoch or west to Turnberry and Royal Troon for the Ayrshire leg.

A sample five night Fife trip

Nights 1 to 2 · Base in St Andrews. Settle into the home of golf. Warm up over the New or Jubilee, walk the 18th of the Old Course at dusk, and dine in town. Caddies booked for the marquee rounds ahead.
Day 2 · Kingsbarns. Seven miles down the coast, Kyle Phillips' modern links tumbles along the North Sea. Wind dependent, imaginative, and arguably the most fun round of the week.
Day 3 · The Old Course. The pilgrimage round: the Swilcan Bridge, the double greens and the Road Hole 17th. Tee time secured by advance package or ballot, weather embraced rather than feared.
Day 4 · Carnoustie Championship. Across the Tay, the toughest finish in championship golf. A stern, honest links that rewards the brave line and punishes the loose one.
Night 5 · North or homeward. Add a Highland leg to Royal Dornoch, or swing west to Turnberry's Ailsa for the lighthouse stretch before flying home from Glasgow or Edinburgh.
Indicative cost

Third party packages for a four to five night Fife trip run from around 1,600 to 4,500 US dollars per person for the 2026 season, depending on hotel tier and which marquee tee times are included. Old Course access lifts the top end. Indicative green fees run from roughly 275 to 500 pounds at the headline links. Always confirm directly before booking.

Best time to book

Marquee tee times release a season ahead and the best dates go quickly, so plan six to twelve months out for a high summer trip. The Old Course advance package and the daily ballot are both worth lining up early. Spring and autumn offer better value and quieter fairways.

Scotland golf questions

When is the best time to play golf in Scotland?
May to September brings the long northern daylight and the firmest links turf, with play possible into the evening in high summer. April and October are quieter and better value, with a higher chance of weather rolling in off the sea.
How do I get a tee time on the Old Course?
Tee times come through the advance daily ballot entered two days ahead, a single round ballot, or a guaranteed advance package booked well ahead. The Old Course is closed to play on Sundays, and handicap limits apply.
Do I need a handicap certificate?
Several championship links, the Old Course among them, request a current handicap certificate. We confirm the requirement for every course on your itinerary before you travel.
How many rounds fit into a week?
Most groups play four to six rounds across a four to five night Fife base, leaving room for a rest day or a wander into St Andrews town.
