5 Day Ayrshire Golf Itinerary
Five days on the southwest coast of Scotland, five of its greatest links, and one base all week. Ayrshire packs the birthplace of the Open, two Open rota courses and a clutch of classics into a tight ribbon along the Firth of Clyde, so you set up near Troon, play every day and barely touch the car. From the modern Dundonald to the lighthouse drama of Turnberry's Ailsa, here is the week, with indicative 2026 green fees and drive times.

Who this trip suits
This is the Ayrshire pilgrimage done in full, built for the golfer who wants the depth of Scotland's southwest coast without spending the week behind the wheel. Royal Troon, Prestwick, Western Gailes and Dundonald sit within a few miles of one another around Troon, and the Ailsa at Turnberry is a comfortable hour south down the coast, so you can set up in one place and play five of the best links in the country in turn. It suits a serious golf group or a couple for whom the golf is the holiday, and it flexes by budget: lean on the cheaper midweek and shoulder rates and the quality barely dips.
The two decisions that shape the week are Turnberry and the season. The Ailsa carries by far the highest green fee, so choose your tee time and dates with that in mind, taking an afternoon or off peak slot to soften the bill, and aim for May to September for the firmest turf. Get those right and the rest of the week falls easily into place around one comfortable Ayrshire base.
The 5 day plan
Dundonald Links
Open on the modern links that has quietly become one of Ayrshire's best, a Kyle Phillips design from 2003 that has hosted the Scottish Open and the Women's Scottish Open. Big, fair and beautifully conditioned, with its own lodge and clubhouse, Dundonald is the ideal first round to find your links legs, and a fine place to base if you want to wake up on the golf. About fifteen minutes from Troon. Indicative 2026 peak green fee around 430 pounds.
Western Gailes Golf Club
A pure, traditional links and a long standing top 100 course, laid out on a narrow strip of duneland between the railway and the sea since 1897. Western Gailes runs out and back in classic fashion, with firm turf, subtle greens and a wonderful old world clubhouse welcome. Many who play it rate it the finest of the central Ayrshire links, and at an indicative 335 pounds in peak it is fair value beside the marquee names. A few minutes up the coast from Troon.
Prestwick Golf Club
Play the cradle of championship golf. Prestwick laid out its first course under Old Tom Morris in 1851, hosted the very first Open in 1860 and held twenty four Opens in all, and it remains gloriously, defiantly old fashioned, full of blind shots, humps and hollows and the great Cardinal bunker. It is history you walk through, quirky and brilliant in equal measure, and a midweek rate makes it far cheaper than its peak. A short drive south of Troon. Indicative 2026 peak green fee around 380 pounds.
Royal Troon, Old Course
An Open rota course and home of the most famous short hole in golf, the tiny Postage Stamp eighth, where the green hides in the dunes and a half wedge can ruin a card. Royal Troon, which staged the Open as recently as 2024, is a genuine two way test, gentler out with the wind and brutal home into it. Take a caddie for the lines and the lore. Indicative 2026 from around 250 pounds on a midweek Old Course rate, up to a 495 pound day ticket that adds the Portland Course. In town.
The Ailsa, Trump Turnberry
Finish on the most beautiful links in Scotland. The Ailsa, redrawn by Mackenzie Ross after the war and reimagined by Martin Ebert in 2016, runs along the cliffs past the lighthouse with Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran filling the horizon, the stage for the 1977 Duel in the Sun between Watson and Nicklaus. It is the priciest round of the trip, with an indicative peak fee up to about 1,000 pounds, dropping to around 545 after 1pm and far lower out of season. About an hour south down the coast.

When to go and where to stay
Play the trip between May and September for firm turf, long daylight and the best chance of dry links weather, accepting peak fees and busy tee sheets, or take the April and October shoulder for lower prices, quieter courses and far cheaper rounds. Base yourself around Troon or Prestwick for the four central links, all within minutes, and treat Turnberry as a day trip south or a single luxury night at the resort to cap the week. Glasgow Prestwick airport is on the doorstep and Glasgow airport an easy drive, so the Ayrshire coast is one of the simplest great links trips to reach. A hire car or a driver makes the short hops painless, and leaves the evenings for the clubhouses and the coast.

Ayrshire itinerary questions
What is the best 5 day golf itinerary in Ayrshire?
A five day Ayrshire trip can take in the cream of Scotland's southwest coast from one base. Open on the modern Kyle Phillips links at Dundonald, then play the classic Western Gailes, Prestwick the birthplace of the Open, Royal Troon with its Postage Stamp, and finish on the Ailsa at Trump Turnberry beneath the lighthouse and Ailsa Craig. Every course sits within about an hour of central Ayrshire, so you stay in one place all week. Always confirm current tee times and fees directly before booking.
How much does a 5 day Ayrshire golf trip cost in green fees?
Five rounds on this route comfortably clear 2,000 pounds per golfer in green fees alone in peak 2026 season, with the Ailsa at Trump Turnberry the single biggest line at up to about 1,000 pounds at peak times. You can cut the total sharply by taking the Ailsa after 1pm or out of peak season, by playing the classic links on their cheaper midweek rates, and by travelling in the shoulder months. These are indicative figures, so always confirm current fees directly before booking.
Where should you stay for an Ayrshire golf trip?
Base yourself around Troon or Prestwick in central Ayrshire and you are within minutes of Royal Troon, Prestwick, Western Gailes and Dundonald, with Turnberry about an hour south down the coast. Many groups split the week, basing in the Troon area for the four central links and treating Turnberry as a day trip or a single luxury night at the resort. Glasgow Prestwick and Glasgow airports are both close. Always confirm rates and availability before booking.
When is the best time to play golf in Ayrshire?
Play Ayrshire between May and September for the firmest links turf, the longest daylight and the best chance of dry weather, accepting peak green fees and busy tee sheets. The April and October shoulder offers lower prices and quieter courses with a greater risk of wind and rain off the Firth of Clyde. Whenever you travel, the coastal weather is changeable, so pack for all four seasons in a day. Always confirm conditions and rates before booking.
