Bandon Dunes vs Cabot Cape Breton

The two great walking links pilgrimages of North America, one on the Oregon coast, one on a Nova Scotia headland. Bandon Dunes is the deeper trip, five championship courses in the dunes above the Pacific. Cabot Cape Breton is the more dramatic, two courses led by the cliff top Cabot Cliffs. Both are caddies, pushcarts and pure golf. Here is the head to head, verdict first.

The verdict

For depth, variety and a full week of golf, Bandon Dunes wins. Mike Keiser's Oregon resort offers five full courses, the original Bandon Dunes by David McLay Kidd, Tom Doak's Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails by Coore and Crenshaw, Old Macdonald by Doak and Urbina, and Sheep Ranch, also Coore and Crenshaw, plus the Bandon Preserve and Shorty's short courses. That is enough genuinely world ranked golf to fill four or five days without repeating yourself, and it remains the established North American bucket list trip.

For sheer drama and the single most spectacular round, Cabot Cape Breton wins. The Nova Scotia resort has two courses, Rod Whitman's Cabot Links, Canada's first true seaside links, and Cabot Cliffs by Coore and Crenshaw, whose run of par 3s and short par 4s along the cliffs above the Gulf of St Lawrence is among the most photographed golf in the world. It is a more compact trip, two or three days, but the coastline is unmatched. Choose Bandon for breadth and a longer stay, Cabot for the most dramatic links and a shorter, sharper hit.

Bandon Dunes vs Cabot Cape Breton questions

Is Bandon Dunes or Cabot Cape Breton better?

Both are world class walking links resorts and you should aim to play each eventually, but they are pitched differently. Bandon Dunes in Oregon is the bigger, deeper trip, five full eighteen hole courses plus two short courses, enough for a week of variety and the more established bucket list. Cabot Cape Breton in Nova Scotia is more compact and more spectacular, two courses led by Cabot Cliffs, whose run of cliff top holes is among the most photographed in the game. Choose Bandon for breadth and a longer stay, Cabot for the most dramatic coastline and a shorter, sharper hit.

How much does it cost to play Bandon Dunes or Cabot Cape Breton?

Both price golf as a premium resort experience. At Bandon Dunes, indicative 2026 peak season green fees for resort guests are around 375 dollars a round, with a second round of the day discounted and far lower rates in winter; day visitors pay a premium and caddies are about 125 dollars a bag plus gratuity. Cabot Cape Breton charges comparable peak resort guest rates per round in Canadian dollars, with optional caddies from around 60 to 90 dollars a bag plus gratuity. Both are walking only and both are indicative figures that move with season, so always confirm directly before booking.

When is the best time to play Bandon Dunes and Cabot Cape Breton?

Bandon Dunes plays year round but is best from late spring to early fall, May to October, when the Oregon coast is driest and warmest, though it is a links and wind and rain are always possible. Cabot Cape Breton has a shorter season, roughly May to October with the peak in summer, because Nova Scotia winters close the courses. For the most reliable weather at either, aim for the heart of summer through early fall.

Can you walk on and play, and are carts allowed?

Both resorts are walking only by design, part of the pure links experience, with carts available only for guests who have a genuine medical need and the proper documentation. Caddies and pushcarts are available at each. Tee times at both are reserved well in advance and tied to lodging, so the realistic way to play is to book a stay and play package rather than walk up.
