How we chose

How we ranked the best of Costa Blanca golf

Our ranking puts the quality of the design first, then condition, setting and the wider experience. The Costa Blanca's strength is modern resort golf, led by a small group of courses good enough to feature in European rankings, with a deeper field of dependable, sunny holiday courses behind them. The verdicts are ours; the design credits and award histories we cite are a matter of record.

The courses spread along the Alicante coast and its hinterland, from Denia in the north down through Alicante itself to the Orihuela Costa and the Murcia border in the south. Alicante airport sits in the middle, and most of the leading courses are part of resorts or welcome visitors freely, which makes a Costa Blanca golf week simple and good value.

The ranking

The ten best golf courses on the Costa Blanca

From the award winning Cabell Robinson design at Las Colinas to the Olazabal layout at La Sella, ranked with our verdicts and the reasons to play each one.

01

Las Colinas Golf & Country Club

Orihuela Costa · Cabell Robinson · 2010

The Costa Blanca's number one and a Cabell Robinson design from 2010, voted Spain's best golf course at the World Golf Awards three years running and a fixture in Europe's top hundred. Each hole runs through its own valley in unspoilt countryside, secluded and beautifully presented. The standout round on the coast.

02

La Sella Golf

Denia · Jose Maria Olazabal · 27 holes

A twenty seven hole Jose Maria Olazabal design at the foot of the Montgo massif near Denia, attached to a Marriott resort. Pine framed fairways and mountain views run through a layout that balances challenge and beauty, and it has hosted professional golf. One of the most complete resort experiences on the coast.

03

Font del Llop

Monforte del Cid · Stirling and Martin · parkland

A Blake Stirling and Marco Martin design near Alicante airport, laid out to international championship proportions with five tees on every hole and a distinct character to each green. Quiet, generous off the tee and well conditioned, it is a favourite of returning visitors.

04

Villamartin

Orihuela Costa · Paul Putman · 1972

One of the oldest courses on the coast, a 1972 Paul Putman design that hosted a European Tour event and has been played by Ballesteros, Olazabal and Woosnam. A mature, tree lined classic with a famous closing hole, it remains a Costa Blanca institution.

05

La Finca Golf

Algorfa · Pepe Gancedo · resort

A Pepe Gancedo design in the Vega Baja near Torrevieja, attached to a smart hotel and spa. Rolling, strategic and well kept, with water in play across the back nine, it is one of the most enjoyable resort rounds in the south of the region.

06

Alenda Golf

Monforte del Cid · parkland · par 72

A friendly, well established parkland close to Alicante airport, open and forgiving enough for a relaxed holiday round yet long enough to test the better player from the back tees. Reliable conditioning and easy access make it a popular first or last day course.

07

Bonalba Golf

Mutxamel · Ramon Espinosa · parkland

A Ramon Espinosa design just north of Alicante city, a mature parkland with water, mature trees and mountain views. Central, accessible and good value, it is one of the handiest quality rounds for golfers based around Alicante and Benidorm.

08

Alicante Golf

Alicante · Seve Ballesteros · links style

A Seve Ballesteros design on the edge of Alicante city near the beach at San Juan, laid out in a links inspired style with undulating ground and clever bunkering. A characterful, central course that carries the imprint of its famous architect.

09

Lo Romero Golf

Pilar de la Horadada · parkland · par 72

A modern course in the far south of the region near the Murcia border, generous and scenic with water features and a relaxed feel. Well priced and easy to play, it rounds out a southern Costa Blanca itinerary alongside Villamartin and La Finca.

10

El Plantio Golf

Alicante · resort · 27 holes

A convenient resort course minutes from Alicante airport, with a full eighteen and a short course, popular for its accessibility and easygoing golf. An ideal arrival or departure day round, and a fitting close to our Costa Blanca ten.
