Ullna Golf Club

Ullna opened in 1981 as Sven Tumba's lakeside vision north of Stockholm, then closed and reopened in June 2013 after a thorough Nicklaus Design rebuild. A par 72 wrapped around the shore of Lake Ullna with water in play on most holes, it is one of the most photogenic parkland courses in Scandinavia.

The verdict

Ullna lies about 20 kilometres north of Stockholm at Akersberga, strung along the edge of Lake Ullna. The club dates to 1981 and the tennis and golf entrepreneur Sven Tumba, but the course you play today is essentially a new one, rebuilt by Nicklaus Design and reopened in June 2013 after almost two years closed.

The rebuild leaned into the water. Lakes, inlets and the main shoreline come into play on the majority of holes, and the greens are bold and well defended, so accuracy off the tee and a steady nerve on the approach count for everything. It is a polished, resort grade parkland with a memorable lakeside clubhouse, and it ranks among the better modern courses around the Swedish capital.

The holes worth the trip

Water is the theme at Ullna and it is unrelenting in the best way, with the lake, its inlets and a series of constructed ponds threatening tee shots and approaches across most of the round. The fairways are generous enough to give you a chance, but the angles into the greens are dictated by where you are willing to flirt with the edge of the water.

The Nicklaus rebuild gave the greens real shape, with run offs, tiers and well placed bunkering that demand the right portion rather than just the surface. Distance control matters as much as line, because a long approach that lands on the wrong tier can leave a putt that is almost impossible to lag close.

The closing stretch along the shoreline is the signature, the kind of lakeside finish that photographs beautifully and tests the nerve when there is a card to protect. With the clubhouse looking out over the water, Ullna is a fitting headline round for a short golf trip out of Stockholm.
