Why golf in Savannah
Savannah is one of the most charming cities in America, a grid of leafy squares, antebellum houses and Spanish moss laid out along the river, and that romance is half the appeal of a golf trip here. The courses sit among the marshes and barrier islands of the Georgia Lowcountry, framed by ancient oaks, tidal creeks and wide coastal skies, and the historic district itself offers some of the finest dining and easiest evenings in the South. A group can play good golf by day and walk to superb restaurants and bars at night, with the non golfers spoiled for things to do.
The headline public round is the Club at Savannah Harbor, the Robert Cupp and Sam Snead design that opened in 1999 on Hutchinson Island, reached by a short ferry from River Street and once home to the Champions Tour Legends of Golf. Across the water on Skidaway Island, the private Landings Club holds six courses by Arnold Palmer, Tom Fazio and Arthur Hills, while public layouts and the famous courses of Hilton Head sit within an easy drive. It is relaxed, scenic resort golf wrapped around a genuinely great city.
The regions
Hutchinson Island and the river
The Club at Savannah Harbor and the Westin resort on Hutchinson Island, a short ferry across the river from the historic district, the most convenient marquee golf and lodging for a city based trip.
Skidaway Island and the south
The Landings Club's six private courses on Skidaway Island, plus the resort golf toward Richmond Hill and the Ogeechee River, the deepest concentration of quality golf around the city.
The wider Lowcountry
Public courses around Pooler and the airport, and the famous courses of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton across the South Carolina line, all within an easy day trip of Savannah.
The courses that matter
The Club at Savannah Harbor
The headline public round, a par 72 laid out between the Savannah and Back Rivers on Hutchinson Island, managed by Troon and reached by a short ferry from downtown. It hosted the Champions Tour Legends of Golf from 2003 to 2013 and pairs marsh and river views with the Westin resort beside it.
The Landings Club, Deer Creek
The newest and most celebrated of the six Landings courses, a Tom Fazio design on Skidaway Island that threads through marsh and forest with strong, strategic holes. Private, but the centrepiece of the area's deepest golf collection and a highlight of any stay and play arrangement.
The Landings Club, Marshwood
The original Landings course, an Arnold Palmer and Frank Duane design opened in 1974 and comprehensively rebuilt by Tim Liddy in 2003, running along the salt marsh with classic Lowcountry character and the most natural marsh frontage on the island.
The Landings Club, Magnolia
A second Arnold Palmer course at The Landings, opened in the late 1970s and later remodelled by Tim Liddy, a parkland and marsh layout among the oaks and lagoons, a popular member favourite and a fine partner round to Marshwood.
The Landings Club, Palmetto
An Arthur Hills design at The Landings winding through pines, lagoons and marsh, generously proportioned and enjoyable, one of six on Skidaway Island and a relaxed, scenic round in the heart of the community.
Crosswinds Golf Club
The pick of the public golf close to the airport at Pooler, an open, well kept eighteen hole championship course plus a nine hole par 3, breezy and accessible, great value and an easy round on an arrival or departure day.
Henderson Golf Club
A friendly public par 71 southwest of the city with two distinct nines, open and rolling out, more tree lined coming home, a dependable, affordable round and a popular choice for visiting groups on a budget.
The Ford Field and River Club
An exclusive private Pete Dye course on the historic Ford plantation along the Ogeechee River south of the city, low country golf of real quality in a beautiful, secluded estate setting, available to visitors through select arrangements.
Savannah Quarters Country Club
A Greg Norman Signature course in the Savannah Quarters community at Pooler, a polished parkland layout with water and wetlands in play, the best of the courses on the western, airport side of the city.
Southbridge Golf Club
A Rees Jones design in a wooded community on the west side of Savannah, a mature, tree lined parkland course that plays firm and fair, a long standing local favourite and a solid public option close to town.
The Westin Savannah Harbor resort
The on island resort beside the Club at Savannah Harbor, with the only stay and play golf lodging on the river and a spa, the natural base for a city trip built around the marquee public course.
Hilton Head Island
Across the state line and around forty five minutes away, Hilton Head and Bluffton add Harbour Town Golf Links and a wealth of resort golf, the obvious day trip or second base to widen a Savannah trip.

Getting there and around
Savannah Hilton Head International airport sits just west of the city near Pooler with direct flights from across the eastern United States, around fifteen minutes from downtown and the public courses. The historic district is compact and walkable, but the golf is spread across the islands and the western suburbs, so a hire car is the simplest way to move between courses and out to Hilton Head. The ferry to Hutchinson Island for the Club at Savannah Harbor leaves from River Street, a charming way to reach the marquee round.
Where to stay
For the city, the boutique hotels and inns of the historic district put the squares, the restaurants and River Street on the doorstep, the classic Savannah base. For a golf focused stay, the Westin on Hutchinson Island sits beside the Club at Savannah Harbor with the only on river resort lodging and a spa. Many groups stay downtown for the atmosphere and drive out to the courses, or split a few nights between the city and Hilton Head. Let one planner balance the golf and the evenings.
