The Best Golf Courses in Savannah

Spanish moss, tidal marsh and a string of courses designed by some of the biggest names in the game make the Georgia coast one of the South's most appealing golf escapes. From a resort course on the Savannah River that has hosted the Champions Tour to a Pete Dye gem across the Ogeechee, here are the six courses we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Savannah golf is coastal golf: saltwater marsh, tidal creeks, cypress and live oak, and a humid, forgiving climate that keeps the turf green for most of the year. The courses range from a polished resort layout on Hutchinson Island, the obvious base for a visiting group, to gated private communities on the barrier islands and a celebrated Pete Dye course just across the Ogeechee River, plus a genuine Donald Ross municipal in town. The variety, the history and the easy pairing of golf with one of America's most beautiful cities are what set the destination apart.

We weighed design quality, conditioning, setting and how each course fits a relaxed Southern golf trip, and we flagged which courses are public and which need an introduction. Every designer, year and detail was checked at the time of writing. The order and the verdicts are our editors' view, so reasonable people will reorder the field. If you want any of these built into a costed trip with access and tee times handled, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

The Club at Savannah Harbor

Sam Snead & Bob Cupp · Hutchinson Island · resort

The easiest great round to play in Savannah and the natural base for a visiting group, a Sam Snead and Bob Cupp design on Hutchinson Island attached to the Westin Savannah Harbor resort and spa. Built on a risk and reward philosophy and laid out beside the Savannah River with views back to the historic district, it has hosted the PGA Tour Champions and offers the polish, the practice facilities and the open access that the private clubs do not. For most golf trips to the coast this is the centrepiece.

02

The Landings Club

Palmer, Fazio, Hills, Byrd · Skidaway Island

The deepest collection of golf in the region, six championship courses spread across Skidaway Island, with Arnold Palmer behind the Magnolia and Marshwood layouts, Tom Fazio behind Deer Creek, Arthur Hills behind Oakridge and Palmetto, and Willard Byrd behind Terrapin Point. Routed through saltwater marsh, creeks and forest, it is a private members club and one of the great golf communities in the South, offering more variety in one place than anywhere else on the coast. Access is by member introduction.

03

The Ford Field and River Club

Pete Dye · Richmond Hill · private

Arguably the single finest course in the Savannah area, a magnificent Pete Dye layout set on a vast estate across the Ogeechee River near Richmond Hill, around thirty minutes from downtown. It carries all the Dye hallmarks, the bold shaping, the visual intimidation off the tee and the demanding, beautifully conditioned greens, in a serene low country setting of oaks and marsh. A private club worth every effort to arrange for the better player chasing the best golf in the region.

04

The Club at Savannah Quarters

Greg Norman Signature · par 72 · Pooler

A Greg Norman Signature design on the Savannah Quarters Country Club property in Pooler, a par 72 that weaves through waterways and towering cypress and oak with six sets of tees to suit every standard. The signature is the par 3 fifteenth, a striking island green looking over the lagoon. Modern, well conditioned and enjoyable, it rounds out the private golf to the west of the city and pairs neatly with a stay near the airport and the historic district.

05

Bacon Park Golf Course

Donald Ross · 1926 · par 72 · municipal

A genuine slice of golf heritage in the heart of the city, a Donald Ross design dating to 1926 owned by the City of Savannah and open to all. Wide fairways, mature trees and the gentle Ross routing make it a relaxed, affordable round and a longtime local favourite, the only chance most visitors will get to play a Ross course on the trip. Not a championship test, but a charming, walkable piece of history that earns its place on any Savannah list.

06

Crosswinds Golf Club

par 72 · public · near the airport

The most convenient public golf for a group based near the airport, a well kept par 72 with an enjoyable, varied routing of five par 3s and five par 5s that keeps the round interesting. It is an easy, accessible course rather than a marquee one, ideal as a warm up round or a relaxed second day alongside the bigger names. With open tee sheets and good value it is a useful addition when you want more golf without the formality of the private clubs.
