Why golf in Hungary

Hungary is one of Europe's quiet golfing bargains. The country has a smaller field of courses than its western neighbours, but the best of them are genuinely good, beautifully conditioned and a fraction of the price of comparable golf in Britain, Spain or the Alps. Pannonia Golf and Country Club, a Doug Carrick collaboration west of Budapest, and Zala Springs, a Robert Trent Jones Jr resort near Lake Balaton, would hold their heads up in any country, and both can be played for green fees that would barely cover a buggy elsewhere.

The real draw is the trip around the golf. Budapest is one of Europe's great cities, with the thermal baths, the Danube and a dining and nightlife scene that rivals any capital, and the western spa towns pair championship golf with the wellness culture Hungary is famous for. For a travelling golfer it makes an easy, inexpensive long weekend, or a relaxed week that mixes a couple of marquee rounds with a city and a spa.

The regions

Budapest and around

The capital and its hinterland, home to Pannonia west of the city and Old Lake Golf Club at Tata, the easiest region to pair championship golf with one of Europe's great city breaks.

Getting there and around

Budapest is the gateway, with direct flights from across Europe and a fast motorway network that puts the best courses within easy reach. Pannonia and Old Lake at Tata are short drives west of the city, Zala Springs and the Balaton courses are around two hours southwest, and the Buk spa courses near the Austrian border are about three hours from the capital, or a short hop from Vienna and Graz for golfers approaching from the west. A hire car is the sensible way to link the regions, since the courses sit out in the countryside rather than in the city.

Where to stay

Match the base to the trip. For a city and golf weekend, a hotel in central Budapest pairs the baths and the Danube with day trips to Pannonia and Tata. For a wellness week, the spa hotels at Buk put Birdland and Greenfield on the doorstep alongside the famous thermal pools. By Lake Balaton, the resort accommodation at Zala Springs and the lakeside hotels make a relaxed base for golf, wine and the shore. Let one planner line up the right base for each leg.
