Golf in Helsinki

The Finnish capital is one of Europe's quiet golf surprises, with Finland's oldest club tucked into a manor park inside the city and a ring of top ranked courses through the forests and along the Baltic coast within an hour. The headline act is the light: at midsummer the sun barely sets, so you can tee off at nine in the evening and still play eighteen in daylight.

Why golf in Helsinki

Helsinki packs a genuinely good golf trip into a compact, easy corner of the Nordics. The city itself holds Finland's oldest club, Helsinki Golf Club at Tali, founded in 1932 and laid through the parkland of a nineteenth century manor estate just a few kilometers from the centre. Spread out into the surrounding region of Uusimaa and you find the courses that top the national rankings, from the forested Tom McBroom layouts at Kytaja to the coastal Fream and Benz courses at Nordcenter, almost all of them welcoming to visitors and a fraction of the price of marquee golf further south in Europe.

The real draw, though, is the season and the light. Finnish summers are short but intense, and from late May into August the days are enormous, with near round the clock daylight at midsummer that lets you play a full round at midnight. The golf is classic Nordic parkland and forest, threading between birch and pine, lakes and granite, with the soft, immaculate turf of a cool maritime climate. Pair it with a clean, design led city of saunas, islands and excellent food and Helsinki makes a different kind of golf weekend, one the non golfers will enjoy too.

The courses that matter

Helsinki Golf Club, Tali · 1932

The oldest golf club in Finland, founded in 1932 and routed through the parkland of Tali Manor only minutes from the city centre. Mature, historic and the host of more championships than any other Finnish club, it is the natural first round of a Helsinki trip. Members and guests.

Kytaja Golf · Tom McBroom

The benchmark for Finnish golf, with two Tom McBroom courses, the North West and the South East, routinely ranked first and second in the country. Carved through deep forest and rolling terrain near Hyvinkaa, about 50 minutes north of the city. Visitor friendly.

Nordcenter Golf & Country Club · Raseborg

A 36 hole resort club about 70 minutes west of Helsinki near Karis, where both the Fream and the Benz courses feature among Finland's top layouts. Mature, coastal and well conditioned, it is rated among the best golf in southern Finland. Open to visitors.

Hirsala Golf · Kirkkonummi

A championship standard course on a peninsula southwest of the city near Kirkkonummi, ranked among the world's most sustainable courses. An 18 hole layout with a 9 hole loop, sea views and a strong clubhouse make it a polished, modern day out. Visitor access by booking.

Pickala Golf · Siuntio

The largest golf complex near Helsinki, with three full courses at Siuntio on the coast, the Seaside, Park and Forest, each with its own character. Plenty of golf in one place for a group, with on site accommodation, about 45 minutes from the city. Open to visitors.

Espoo Golf Club · Espoo

A well regarded parkland club in Espoo, the city's western neighbour, a par 72 close to the metro and easy to combine with a city base. Reliable, mature golf that rounds out a Helsinki itinerary without a long drive. Visitor friendly.

Linna Golf · Hameenlinna

A Tim Lobb championship layout about an hour north at Hameenlinna, tree lined and undulating beside Katumajarvi lake, and the host of the 2026 European Amateur Championship. A worthwhile day trip for golfers chasing the best of Finnish course design. Visitor access.

Designers, founding years and rankings verified June 2026 from the clubs and recognized course databases. Helsinki Golf Club, founded 1932, is the oldest in Finland; Kytaja's two courses are Tom McBroom designs rated at the top of the national rankings; Linna is a Tim Lobb course hosting the 2026 European Amateur. Access, conditioning and the open season change, so confirm with each club before planning.

Getting there, costs and where to stay

Helsinki Airport (HEL) is one of the best connected hubs in northern Europe, with direct flights across the continent, North America and Asia, and it sits just 30 minutes from the city centre by train or car. The courses fan out around the capital, from Tali inside the city to the forest and coastal clubs between 30 and 70 minutes away, so a hire car or a driver makes a multi course trip simple. The whole region is easy to drive, with short distances and light traffic.

Finland is not a budget destination, but green fees are very fair for the quality and far below the marquee courses of Britain, Ireland or the Mediterranean. Most golfers base in central Helsinki for the food, design and waterfront, and drive out each day, or stay on site at a resort club like Pickala to keep golf and lodging together. We can pair the right city hotel with the best of the regional courses and arrange the tee times and transfers as one package.
