Why play golf in Hokkaido

Hokkaido is Japan's summer golf escape. While the mainland swelters from June to September, the northern island stays cool and green, and its great ski resorts reopen as golf country, with fairways running through birch forest beneath volcanoes and beside crater lakes. The light comes early, the air is clean and the scenery is the equal of anywhere in Asia, which makes a round here feel like a proper mountain getaway rather than just a tee time.

The golf clusters in the southwest of the island, within reach of New Chitose Airport at Sapporo. Hokkaido Classic and Windsor Great Peak of Toya carry the Jack Nicklaus name, Rusutsu offers 72 holes across one resort, and Niseko adds resort golf beneath Mount Yotei. Pair the rounds with the onsen hot springs, the seafood and the lakes, and you have one of the most distinctive trips in world golf. The four to build a trip around

Hokkaido Classic, near Tomakomai

A Jack Nicklaus Signature design opened in 1991, less than half an hour from the port of Tomakomai and within easy reach of New Chitose Airport. Tree lined fairways fan out from the clubhouse in two returning loops, and the course stretches to about 7,059 yards from the back, the island's headline parkland test.

Windsor Great Peak of Toya, Lake Toya

The mountaintop course at the Windsor hotel high above Lake Toya, a Jack Nicklaus design with sweeping views over the caldera lake and out to the sea. Consistently rated at the very top in Hokkaido, it is the most scenic resort round on the island.

Rusutsu Resort Golf 72, Rusutsu

The largest golf complex in Hokkaido, four distinct courses and 72 holes set among birch forest and overseen by the legendary Jumbo Ozaki. A relaxed, family friendly resort that pairs golf with a famous summer playground, ideal for a multi round base.

Niseko Village Golf, Niseko

Resort golf in the heart of the famous Niseko ski region, played beneath the perfect cone of Mount Yotei. Pair it with the onsen, the restaurants and the green summer landscape that draws visitors who only ever knew Niseko under snow.

Costs, getting there and where to stay

Green fees in Hokkaido are reasonable by world resort standards, indicatively 8,000 to 25,000 yen, often with a cart and sometimes the leisurely Japanese lunch break built in. Caddies are less common than in southern Asia, and many courses use a self drive cart system. See our Japan green fees guide for the full picture.

Nearly everyone arrives through New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, well connected to Tokyo and across Asia. A hire car is the easiest way to link the courses, with Hokkaido Classic close to the airport, Lake Toya, Rusutsu and Niseko clustered an hour or so to the southwest. Roads are good and quiet, and the drives are part of the pleasure.

For a golf focused stay, base at one of the resorts around Lake Toya, Rusutsu or Niseko, which put several courses, the onsen and the dining on your doorstep. We can pair the right resort with prebooked tee times across the island.

Rates move with the day and the season, so always confirm directly before booking.

What are the best golf courses in Hokkaido?

Hokkaido Classic, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design near Tomakomai, and Windsor Great Peak of Toya, a Nicklaus course at the Windsor hotel above Lake Toya, are the headline rounds. Rusutsu Resort offers 72 holes, the largest complex on the island, and Niseko Village adds resort golf beneath Mount Yotei.

Is Hokkaido good for a golf trip?

Hokkaido suits the golfer who wants cool summer golf, dramatic mountain and lake scenery and the food and onsen culture for which the island is famous.
