Muirfield Village

Jack Nicklaus built Muirfield Village in his home town as the American answer to Augusta, a par 72 of about 7,571 yards that he has refined for fifty years. It has hosted the Memorial Tournament every spring since 1976 and stands as one of the most demanding and immaculately conditioned courses on the PGA Tour.

The verdict

Nicklaus designed Muirfield Village with Desmond Muirhead and opened it in 1974, naming it for the Scottish links where he won his first Open. It was conceived as both a championship venue and a spectator course, and the Memorial has been played here every year since 1976, making it one of the most familiar layouts in professional golf.

Nicklaus has never stopped refining it, and a major 2020 renovation rebuilt every green, repositioned bunkers and stretched the course past 7,500 yards. The result is a relentless par 72 with water in play on the closing stretch and some of the firmest, fastest greens the Tour sees outside the majors. It is private, but as a study in modern championship design by the greatest player in history it is unmatched.

The holes worth the trip

Muirfield Village is a second shot golf course. The fairways are framed by mounding and mature trees, and the premium is on controlling the approach into greens that run fast and tilt firmly. Nicklaus rewards the player who can work the ball both ways and punishes the one out of position.

The closing holes are the signature. Water guards the par 5 fifteenth and the short par 3 sixteenth, and the long par 4 eighteenth climbs to a green beneath the clubhouse that has settled the Memorial many times over. The 2020 rebuild added length and firmed the greens, turning an already stern test into one of the hardest on Tour.

Conditioning is the other story. Few clubs anywhere present a course in the manner of Muirfield Village, the bunkering crisp and the putting surfaces pure, a standard Nicklaus has chased for half a century. It is target golf at the highest level, demanding and fair in equal measure.
