Quail Hollow Club

George Cobb routed Quail Hollow in 1961 on rolling Charlotte parkland, and a long collaboration with Tom Fazio turned it into one of the toughest finishing tests in American golf. A par 71 of about 7,626 yards, it is home of the Green Mile and has hosted the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2025 and the 2022 Presidents Cup.

The verdict

George Cobb opened Quail Hollow Club in June 1961 on gently rolling land in south Charlotte, and over the decades Arnold Palmer and then Tom Fazio reshaped it into a modern major venue. Today it plays as a par 71 of roughly 7,626 yards and ranks among the most demanding championship parkland courses in the United States.

Quail Hollow is defined by its finish. The closing three holes, known as the Green Mile, combine water, length and pressure to wreck a good round in minutes, and they have produced some of the most dramatic moments in recent professional golf. The club has hosted the long running Wells Fargo Championship, the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2025 and the Presidents Cup in 2022. It is a private members club, so visiting golfers should plan access carefully.

The holes worth the trip

Quail Hollow plays long and demanding from the championship tees, with generous landing areas off many tees that narrow into testing approaches over water and into firm, subtly contoured greens. The Fazio work added length and bite while keeping the rhythm of the original Cobb routing.

The course is best known for the Green Mile, the closing trio of the 16th, 17th and 18th. The 16th is a long par 4 played to a green guarded by water, the 17th a par 3 over a lake, and the 18th a brutal two shotter with a creek down the left, a stretch that has decided championships.

Earlier in the round there is real variety and risk and reward, but Quail Hollow is remembered for how it finishes. It is a course that rewards driving, nerve and the ability to hold the line under pressure, which is exactly why the professionals respect it.
