Alcaidesa Heathland
Dave Thomas added the Heathland in 2007 as the inland partner to Alcaidesa's famous seaside Links. A par 72 of about 6,415 yards that rises onto an elevated plateau near San Roque, it offers a longer, more open test with sweeping views over the coast to Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.

The verdict
The Heathland is the second course at the resort now branded La Hacienda Alcaidesa, the inland counterpoint to the celebrated seaside Links next door. Dave Thomas designed it and it opened in 2007, climbing onto an elevated plateau above the coast near San Roque, and the result is a longer, more open and more conventional championship test than its links sibling, a par 72 of about 6,415 yards. The trade for the climb is the view: from the high ground the whole sweep of the bay lays out below, with Gibraltar and the African coast beyond.
Where the Links rewards a low, running game, the Heathland is a more aerial, modern layout where length and ball striking matter more. The two courses together are the real draw of a stop here: play the Links for the rare seaside experience and the Heathland for a sterner, fuller eighteen, ideally in a single day. It slots neatly into a Sotogrande or San Roque trip alongside the championship golf of the area.

The holes worth the trip
The Heathland makes the most of its elevated site. The opening stretch and the closing holes sit high on the plateau, where the ground is firm and the views over the coast are the wide, photographic kind, while the middle of the round drops and rolls across more sheltered terrain. The contrast in elevation gives a real variety of stances and sight lines, and the wind, while less constant than on the seaside Links, still has a say on the exposed high holes.
At about 6,415 yards it is the longer of the two courses, and it asks more of the driver and the long irons. The fairways are generous enough to keep the round enjoyable, but the green complexes are well defended and the approaches reward distance control, especially when the breeze gets up on the plateau. It is a fairer, more modern test than the quirky, contour driven Links.
The signature pleasure is simply standing on the high tees with the whole bay, Gibraltar and Africa laid out beyond, and hitting into that panorama. Paired with the Links in a single day, the Heathland completes one of the most varied 36 hole stops on the southern Costa del Sol, a short drive from Sotogrande and the championship courses at San Roque.

Alcaidesa sits at the southern end of the Costa del Sol, on the doorstep of Sotogrande and a short drive from La Linea and San Roque. Most visiting golfers base themselves around Sotogrande for its marina, dining and easy access to the cluster of championship courses at this end of the coast, including San Roque and Valderrama.
The resort's two courses make it a natural anchor for a 36 hole stop, and we can pair the Heathland and Links with the championship golf nearby. We can arrange the lodging, the tee times and the order of play to suit your group.
