The verdict
Morgado opened in 2003 as the championship course of the Morgado do Reguengo estate north of Portimao, laid out by European Golf Design on a wide, rolling inland stretch beneath the Monchique mountains. It is a par 73 of about 6,433 meters, one of the longer courses in the Algarve, with generous fairways, well shaped bunkering and exposure to the breeze that can make it play longer still.
It is a course built for a proper round of golf, room to open the shoulders off the tee but a real examination on the approach, and it consistently offers some of the best value championship golf in the region. As a full day to anchor a western Algarve trip it is hard to beat. See our best of Portugal ranking and the golf in Portugal guide.

Designer, year and par verified June 2026 from the resort, GolfPass and Algarve golf sources. Morgado, designed by European Golf Design, opened in 2003 above Portimao, a long par 73 of about 6,433 meters on the Reguengo estate. Green fees are excellent value as an indicative 2026 guide, from around 60 euros in low season to about 90 euros at peak, with twilight rates lower. Rates vary by season; always confirm the current rate directly before booking.
The holes worth the trip
Morgado is a course of width and length. The fairways are some of the most generous in the Algarve, inviting a driver on most holes, but the scale of the place and the par 73 routing mean there is plenty of golf to negotiate, with long par 4s and reachable par 5s that tempt a bold second shot.
The defenses are the bunkers, the greens and the wind. European Golf Design shaped large, well placed sand and sizeable, contoured greens, so a wayward approach is punished even where the tee shot felt easy. On a breezy day the exposure of the inland setting adds a full club or two and turns a comfortable round into a stern one.
It is honest, big country golf with the Monchique hills as a backdrop, the sort of layout where a good ball striker can score but a loose round gets found out. Paired with its quieter sister course on the same estate, it gives a complete western Algarve base with real value.
