The verdict

Quivira is the most spectacular round in Los Cabos, and arguably one of the most spectacular anywhere. Jack Nicklaus built it on the headland at Cabo's Land's End, where the desert meets the Pacific in cliffs, granite and rolling dunes, and he routed the holes to use every bit of that drama. It opened in 2014 as a par 72 of about 7,085 yards, and what sets it apart is sheer ocean exposure: more holes touch or hang above the water here than on any other course in the region.

That setting comes with a trade. Quivira is the golf course of the Pueblo Bonito resorts, so play is primarily reserved for resort guests and owners, with tee times arranged through the resort rather than as walk up daily fee golf. Published rates are premium and run inclusive of cart, range and food and refreshments at the comfort stations around the course. The holes worth the trip

Quivira is a course of big moments. The round climbs from the dunes near the beach up onto the cliffs, and the transitions between those worlds are where Nicklaus had his fun, with elevated tees that look out over the open Pacific and forced carries above the surf. The par 3s perched on the headland are the postcards, but the long holes that wind along the clifftops are where the wind and the nerve really get tested.

The comfort stations dotted around the property are part of the experience, a Cabo touch that keeps the round social as well as scenic. Because so many holes are exposed to the ocean, the wind is the great equalizer: on a calm morning Quivira is reachable and generous, and on a breezy afternoon it becomes a very different proposition.
