Playa Mujeres Golf Club
Playa Mujeres is the Greg Norman course just north of Cancun, opened in 2006 on a slim peninsula between the Caribbean Sea and the Chacmuchuk Lagoon. A par 72 of about 7,218 yards with paspalum turf throughout, it is the strip's most scenic championship round, and a regular on lists of the best golf around Cancun.

The verdict
Playa Mujeres is the prettiest golf on the Cancun side of the coast, and Greg Norman earned it with the site rather than tricks. The land is a narrow neck between the Caribbean and the Chacmuchuk Lagoon, so water is almost always in the picture, and Norman routed the holes to use both the sea views and the mangrove edges. It opened in 2006 as a par 72 of about 7,218 yards, with paspalum turf that holds up to the salt air and gives the course a clean, firm feel.
It plays as a proper championship test from the back tees, rating about 74.5 with a slope around 139, but it is set up for resort golfers off the forward markers and the service is resort standard. Because it sits a touch north of the main hotel zone, it feels quieter than Moon Palace, which is part of its appeal for a couples trip or a group that wants the scenery as much as the scorecard.

The holes worth the trip
Water is the theme. With the Caribbean on one side and the Chacmuchuk Lagoon on the other, Norman gave the round a series of holes where the line off the tee and the angle into the green are dictated by the edges of the water and the mangroves. A handful of holes flirt with the sea views directly, and the closing stretch brings the lagoon into the decision on more than one approach.
The paspalum turf is a quiet hero, taking the salt and the heat and presenting firm, true surfaces that let the ball run. Norman's bunkering is bold and the greens are large with enough movement to make distance control matter. Off the right tees it is a fair, enjoyable resort round; from the tips at about 7,218 yards it is a genuine test, which is why it features on regional best of lists.
For a Cancun trip Playa Mujeres is the scenery round to set against Moon Palace's scale. We will pair them and the Riviera Maya courses so the week balances the spectacular with the substantial, and book mornings to stay ahead of the heat.
