The verdict
When Davis Love III was handed a corridor of towering natural dunes on the Pacific coast of Cabo San Lucas, he built one of the most acclaimed modern courses in the Americas. Opened in 2009, the Dunes Course at Diamante earned the number one ranking in Mexico from Golf Digest and a place inside Golf Magazine's world top 100, and it set the template for the celebrated residential community that grew up around it.
The land does most of the work. Wide fescue fairways thread between sand dunes that rise well above the player, the greens are big and rolling, and the Pacific is a constant presence down the closing holes. Diamante is a private community, so access runs through ownership and accompanied guest play, but for those who get on it is one of the great rounds in Mexico, firm, dramatic and utterly memorable.

The holes worth the trip
The Dunes Course plays through a corridor of natural sand hills that tower over the fairways, the routing arranged so that every hole gives a different relationship to the Pacific. The fescue fairways are generous, but the wind off the ocean and the bold green contours mean the right angle into each green is everything.
Through the middle of the round the dunes close in and the elevation changes become dramatic, with several tees perched high above the landing areas and views that stretch far up the empty Pacific coast. Davis Love III let the dunes dictate the shape, and the variety of stances and shots is the course's great strength.
The closing holes run along the ocean itself, firm and exposed, where the brave line is rewarded and the timid one punished. Diamante asks the player to read the ground and trust the run of the ball, and it returns one of the most complete dunes experiences anywhere in the Americas.

Where to stay nearby
Diamante is a destination in its own right, a gated Pacific community of residences, villas and a beach club spread along several miles of coast, with the Dunes Course and a second Tiger Woods design, El Cardonal, on site. For those with access, staying within the community is the natural way to play, with the golf, the dunes and the ocean all on the doorstep.
The wider Los Cabos resort strip lies a short drive east, where the marina, dining and the headline resort hotels of the corridor offer a more conventional base. It is an easy region to build a multi course trip around, pairing the Pacific dunes of Diamante with the ocean courses of the Cabo corridor.
