The Best Golf for Couples in Thailand

Few countries blend great golf and a great holiday for two like Thailand. Beaches, spas, food and warmth sit next to championship courses, so one of you can play while the other relaxes, and you meet for sunset. These are the eight courses we rate most highly for a couples trip, ranked, with our verdict on each and where to base around them.

How we chose them

A couples list is not just a list of the hardest or highest ranked courses. It weights scenery, the quality of the resort and spa next door, an easy pace of play, and how well a course sits within a region a non golfer will love, so the round is one part of a holiday rather than the whole of it. Thailand is close to perfect for this: the golf is genuinely world class, and it comes wrapped in the beaches of Phuket and Hua Hin, the gulf islands and the cool hills of the north.

Every fact here, from designers and opening years to host events, was checked at the time of writing against the clubs and recognized sources. The verdicts and the order are our editors' view of what makes a great couples trip, not a pure architectural ranking, so a serious golfer chasing the toughest test will reorder it. Several of these courses sit inside or beside resorts built for exactly this balance. If you want any of them turned into a costed trip with the lodging and spa days planned around the tee times, that is what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Red Mountain Golf Club

Phuket · opened 2007 · public

The most theatrical round on Phuket and our top pick for couples. Carved out of a disused tin mine, Red Mountain tumbles through deep red earth cuttings, terraced fairways and bold elevation changes that make every hole a photograph. It is exciting rather than brutal off the right tees, and it sits within easy reach of the island's best beach resorts and spas, so a partner who does not play has Phuket on the doorstep. Spectacular, memorable and the centerpiece of a romantic Andaman trip.

02

Black Mountain Golf Club

Stig Notlov · Hua Hin · public

The highest ranked course in Thailand and a regular at the top of Asia's lists. Stig Notlov's design winds through old pineapple and mango plantations against a mountain backdrop, with immaculate conditioning, water in play and a genuine championship test that has hosted European and Asian Tour events. If golf is the priority of the trip this is the one to build it around, and Hua Hin's beach town, just a short drive from Bangkok, gives the non golfer plenty to do.

Plan a Hua Hin golf trip

03

Pineapple Valley Golf Club

Hua Hin · formerly Banyan Golf Club

Rebranded from Banyan in 2024, this is one of the most scenic rounds in the country, rolling through former pineapple fields and tropical hills with sea and mountain views. It is generous and enjoyable for a mixed ability pair, beautifully kept, and pairs naturally with Black Mountain for a two course Hua Hin stay. Add the beach hotels and night markets of Hua Hin and you have a relaxed, scenic base that suits couples down to the ground.

04

Blue Canyon Country Club, Canyon Course

Yoshikazu Kato · Phuket · public

The most famous course on Phuket and one of Asia's iconic championship venues, a Yoshikazu Kato design routed around an old tin mine with water and canyon carries on its closing stretch. It hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic where Tiger Woods produced a celebrated comeback, so the pedigree is real. It is a serious test, but from the forward tees it is a thrilling day out, and it sits in the same northern Phuket area as the island's quietest beaches and best resorts.

05

Laguna Phuket Golf Club

Phuket · redesigned 2015

The best base on the island for a couple. Laguna Phuket is an integrated beach resort complex on Bang Tao Bay, with a string of hotels, spas, lagoons and the golf course all linked by shuttle, so you can play in the morning and meet on the beach by lunch. The course was extensively redesigned by Paul Jansen and reopened in 2015, modern and walkable through coconut groves and water. Convenience and quality in one stay, ideal for a honeymoon or anniversary.

06

Santiburi Samui Country Club

Koh Samui · gulf island golf

Island golf at its most romantic. Santiburi climbs the hillside above the north coast of Koh Samui, the holes rising and falling with sweeping views over the Gulf of Thailand and the islands offshore. It is short and scenic rather than a championship grind, exactly right when the round is part of a honeymoon island holiday. Pair it with a Samui beach resort and a spa, and the golf becomes the perfect half day adventure on a paradise island.

07

Siam Country Club, Old Course

Isao Izumi 1971, Schmidt & Curley redesign 2007 · Pattaya

The first private golf course in Thailand, opened in 1971 and rebuilt by Schmidt and Curley in 2007, and since then the host of the Honda LPGA Thailand. It is a polished, world class parkland test set in the hills above Pattaya, within easy reach of Bangkok, which makes it a strong choice for a couple combining a few rounds with the capital's food, shopping and culture. Tournament quality conditioning and a famous closing stretch.

08

Chiang Mai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort

Chiang Mai · the cool north

For couples who want temples and mountains over beaches, the north is the answer, and Chiang Mai Highlands is its standout. Set in rolling foothills with a cooler, drier climate, it offers a relaxed, scenic round and an attached spa resort, paired with one of Thailand's most charming cultural cities. A different side of the country, gentler in pace and temperature, and a lovely base for a couple who like to explore between rounds.

Thailand couples golf questions

What is the best golf course for couples in Thailand?

For couples, Red Mountain in Phuket is our pick, a dramatic, scenic course carved through an old tin mine within easy reach of the island's best beach resorts and spas. Black Mountain in Hua Hin is the highest ranked course in the country and the better choice if golf is the priority. Both pair beautifully with a non golfing partner's day.

When is the best time for a golf trip to Thailand?

The cool, dry season from November to February is the prime window for golf and beach time across Phuket, Hua Hin and Pattaya, with comfortable temperatures and low rainfall. March and April are hotter, and the southwest monsoon brings more rain to the Andaman coast from May to October, though Koh Samui on the gulf side runs to a slightly different pattern.

Are Thailand golf resorts good for non golfing partners?

Exceptionally. Thailand pairs world class golf with beaches, spas, food and easy sightseeing, so a partner who does not play has plenty to do while you are on the course. Laguna Phuket, the Hua Hin beach hotels and the Koh Samui resorts are built around exactly this balance, which is why Thailand is one of the best couples golf destinations in the world.

Can you combine Phuket, Hua Hin and Samui golf on one trip?

Yes, with short domestic flights. Many couples base in one region for relaxation rather than touring hard, but a longer trip can pair the Andaman beaches and courses of Phuket with the gulf island golf of Koh Samui, or add Hua Hin from Bangkok. Our concierge plans the routing, tee times and resorts to keep the travel easy.
