The Best Golf Courses Near Barcelona

Barcelona is not thought of as a golf city, but a short drive in any direction turns up a surprising depth of courses, from a Greg Norman championship complex to a seaside layout by Tom Simpson, with the best course in Spain an hour up the coast. Here are the six we would build a city and golf trip around, with drive times from the centre.

How we chose

This is a list for the traveler who wants both the city and the golf, so we weigh design quality and conditioning alongside how easily each course slots into a Barcelona stay. We have drawn the radius generously: the closest courses are 25 minutes from the centre, while the Camiral resort near Girona is about an hour north and earns its place because it holds the finest golf in the region. Where a course is reliably open to visitors we say so, and we give the drive time from central Barcelona for each.

Designers, founding years and par were verified at the time of writing from the clubs and leading course databases. Green fees move with season and demand, so we have kept to distances and access here and flagged fees as something to confirm directly. Editorial verdicts are our own.

The ranking

1. Real Club de Golf El Prat

Greg Norman · 45 holes · Terrassa · about 40 minutes from the city · visitors welcome

The premier club of the Barcelona area and the natural anchor for a city golf trip. Founded in 1912 and granted royal status by King Alfonso XIII, El Prat moved inland to Terrassa in 2004, where Greg Norman laid out a 45 hole complex of three interchangeable nines across rolling, pine clad terrain. It has hosted the Spanish Open and other European Tour events, the conditioning is excellent and the variety of the nines keeps a multi round visit fresh. Read more in our Real Club El Prat guide.

2. Camiral Stadium Course

Neil Coles, Angel Gallardo and European Golf Design · 1999 · par 72 · near Girona · about an hour north

The best course in the wider region, and routinely rated the number one course in Spain. Opened in 1999 as PGA Catalunya and now part of the Camiral resort near Caldes de Malavella, the Stadium Course is a strategic, beautifully conditioned par 72 of about 7,300 yards, threading through umbrella pines and lakes with the famous par 3 thirteenth and a brilliant closing stretch. It is around an hour north of Barcelona, an easy day trip or a one night stay, and well worth the drive. See our Camiral Stadium guide.

3. Club de Golf Terramar

Tom Simpson · 1922 · par 72 · Sitges · about 40 minutes south

The character pick, and the second oldest club in Catalonia. Tom Simpson laid out Terramar in 1922 on flat ground by the sea at fashionable Sitges, and although it has been revised over the decades it retains a classic, breezy seaside feel rare in the region. It is shorter and more relaxed than the championship courses, which makes it a fine pairing with a day on the Sitges beachfront, an enjoyable round in a lovely setting just south of the city.

4. Club de Golf Vallromanes

F.W. Hawtree · 1971 · par 72 · about 25 minutes north

The most convenient quality round for most city visitors. Designed by the noted British architect F.W. Hawtree and opened in 1971, Vallromanes sits in the hills just northeast of Barcelona, a mature, tree lined parkland that has hosted Spanish professional events. It is well kept, walkable and close enough to play in a morning before an afternoon in the city, which makes it a popular choice for golfers basing themselves downtown.

5. Club de Golf Barcelona

Jose Maria Olazabal design · Sant Esteve Sesrovires · about 40 minutes west

A modern, generous layout designed by two time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal at Sant Esteve Sesrovires, west of the city near the El Prat club. It is a roomy, strategically bunkered course that suits a wide range of standards, with good practice facilities, and the Olazabal name adds appeal. A solid, accessible choice to round out a trip that takes in the bigger championship venues.

6. Golf Sant Cugat

1914 · par 70 · Sant Cugat del Valles · about 30 minutes

The historic short course on the city's doorstep. Founded in 1914 by the British community, Sant Cugat is one of the oldest clubs in Spain, a tight, hilly, par 70 in the leafy suburb of the same name just over the Collserola hills. It is more a clever, traditional test than a long one, but its age, atmosphere and proximity make it a charming round and a window into the early days of Catalan golf.
