Golf in Catalonia
The corner of Spain that will host the 2031 Ryder Cup, where the best inland course in the country sits an hour from Barcelona and a string of warm Costa Brava clubs run down to the Mediterranean. The courses that matter, the regions, the seasons and how to plan it.

Why golf in Catalonia
Catalonia has quietly become the most serious golf region in mainland Spain. The headline is Camiral, the resort near Girona formerly known as PGA Catalunya, whose Stadium Course has ranked as the best in the country for most of this century and which was named host of the 2031 Ryder Cup, only the second time the match has come to Spain after Valderrama in 1997. That single decision has pulled the whole region into focus, and the DP World Tour now plays the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship here too.
Behind Camiral sits real depth. Real Club de Golf El Prat, remodeled by the firm of Greg Norman in the cork oak hills above Terrassa, is a genuine championship club within reach of Barcelona. Down on the Costa Brava, the Robert von Hagge courses at Emporda, the pine framed fairways of Golf de Pals and the clifftop drama of Mas Nou give a sunshine golf week real variety. Add Barcelona itself, the food, the Dali and Gaudi country and short flights into two airports, and Catalonia is a trip that pleases golfers and non golfers in equal measure.
The regions
Costa Brava and Girona
The strongest cluster by far. Camiral, Emporda, Golf de Pals and the courses around Platja d'Aro and Santa Cristina all sit within a short drive, served by Girona and Barcelona airports, and pair naturally with the beaches and the medieval towns.
Barcelona and the Valles
Real Club de Golf El Prat above Terrassa and the parkland clubs of Sant Cugat and Vallromanes ring the city, so a golfer can base in Barcelona, play strong courses by day and have the museums, the food and the Ramblas by night.
The Pyrenees and La Cerdanya
The mountain option. Courses such as Aravell near the Andorra border and the high valleys of La Cerdanya give cool summer golf among the peaks, a fine pairing with hiking and a change of scene from the coast.
The courses that matter
Camiral, Stadium Course
Formerly PGA Catalunya, this is the best course in Spain by most reckonings, a strategic, pine and lake lined test near Girona that has ranked among the top ten in continental Europe since it opened. The chosen venue for the 2031 Ryder Cup and the centerpiece of any Catalonia trip.
Camiral, Tour Course
The resort's gentler second eighteen, shorter and more forgiving than its famous sibling but beautifully conditioned and routed through the same forest and water. The ideal warm up round, or a relaxed day for a mixed ability group based at Camiral.
Real Club de Golf El Prat
One of Spain's most historic clubs, relocated inland to the cork oak hills above Terrassa and rebuilt by the firm of Greg Norman across two championship eighteens. The Pink Course ranks among the best in the country, a muscular, rolling test within easy reach of Barcelona.
Emporda Golf, Forest and Links
Four von Hagge nines most often played as two contrasting eighteens. The Forest twists tight through dense pine, while the Links runs open and rumpled in a British style with water laced through it, two genuinely different rounds on one estate near Girona.
Golf de Pals
The oldest course on the Costa Brava, a classic Hawtree design threading umbrella pine close to the beach at Pals. Narrow, characterful and full of history, it remains one of the most enjoyable and atmospheric rounds in the region.
Club de Golf d'Aro, Mas Nou
The most scenic round in Catalonia, a mountainside layout high above Platja d'Aro with sweeping views down to the Mediterranean. Dramatic elevation changes and a memorable run of holes make it a Costa Brava favorite.
Club de Golf Costa Brava
A mature, tree lined club of twenty seven holes set in a quiet valley near Santa Cristina d'Aro. The Green Course is the test, all dog legs and clever greens through cork oak and pine, a charming, old school companion to the bigger resort names.
Aravell Golf
Mountain golf at its most scenic, a course set in the high valleys near the Andorra border with the peaks of the Pyrenees as a backdrop. Cool in high summer when the coast bakes, it is the natural choice for a golf and mountain pairing.

When to go
| Season | Conditions | Verdict |

| July and August | Hot inland, more comfortable on the coast | Early tee times only, the Pyrenees the cooler choice |

Getting there and around
Catalonia is one of the easiest golf regions in Europe to reach. Barcelona El Prat is a major international hub with flights from across the world, while Girona airport sits right in the heart of the Costa Brava golf cluster and is often the smarter arrival for a coast based trip. A hire car is essential once you land, since the great courses are spread between the city, the coast and the mountains, but the drives are short and the motorways quick, and a Girona base keeps Camiral, Emporda and Golf de Pals all within half an hour. For a Barcelona stay, El Prat and the Valles courses are an easy run from the city.
Where to stay
Match the base to the golf. Camiral is a destination resort in its own right, with hotels and villas on site that put the two courses on your doorstep, the natural choice for a golf first trip. For the wider Costa Brava, the towns of Pals, Begur and Platja d'Aro mix beaches and good hotels with easy access to the courses, while a Girona base adds a beautiful medieval city to the mix. In Barcelona, stay central and treat the golf as day trips into the hills. Book the resort hotels well ahead for the spring and autumn peaks, and let one planner line up the right base for each leg.
