The Best Golf Courses Near Edinburgh

No capital city in the world has greater golf on its doorstep. East along the coast from Edinburgh lies East Lothian, a strip of firm, ancient links that includes an Open venue, a string of historic clubs and a modern Tom Doak design, all inside an hour of the city. Here are the seven we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each.

How we chose them

Edinburgh is the rare city where a golfer can dine in the old town and tee off on a championship links thirty minutes later. The treasure lies just east, along the Firth of Forth in East Lothian, where firm, sandy ground and a benign rain shadow have produced some of the oldest and best links in the game. We have kept the list to courses an easy drive from the city, weighing the quality of the golf, the history and the strength of the links land, with one fine parkland and one historic city club to round it out.

Every fact here, from Open history to designers and hosting records, was checked at the time of writing against the clubs and recognized sources. The verdicts and the order are our editors' view rather than any single published list, so reasonable people will swap the top three. Several of these are private members clubs that welcome visitors on limited days, so plan ahead. If you want a costed East Lothian itinerary built around the tee times you can actually get, with a base in Edinburgh or on the coast, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Muirfield

Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers · Gullane

One of the greatest links in the world and the headline round near Edinburgh, home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and a sixteen time host of the Open Championship. The layout runs in two loops, an outer clockwise and an inner anti clockwise, so the wind shifts on every hole and no two play alike, a fair, strategic and supremely honest test. A private members club that welcomes visitors on limited days, it is the round serious golfers cross the world for, about forty minutes east of the city.

02

North Berwick West Links

North Berwick · historic links

The most charming and idiosyncratic links on the coast, a centuries old course whose quirks have been copied the world over, the original Redan at the fifteenth and the wall crossing the front of the green at the famous par 4 Pit. Holes run along the beach with the Bass Rock and the islands of the Forth for company, walls, burns and blind shots adding to the fun. It is golf as it was first played, hugely enjoyable and welcoming to visitors, and a complete contrast to Muirfield's discipline.

03

The Renaissance Club

Tom Doak · host, Genesis Scottish Open

The modern star of the coast, a Tom Doak design opened in 2008 on wooded dune land at Dirleton between Muirfield and Archerfield, and the host of the Genesis Scottish Open on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour. Doak's routing mixes sheltered holes in the trees with exposed links land toward the Forth, polished, strategic and beautifully conditioned. A private club played by arrangement, it is the contemporary counterpoint to the ancient links around it and a thrill for keen golfers.

04

Gullane No. 1

Gullane · over Gullane Hill

The senior course of the three at Gullane, climbing over Gullane Hill for some of the finest views in golf, a sweeping panorama of the Forth, the links coast and Edinburgh in the distance. The turf is classic, fast running links, the holes a proper test in the wind, and the village club is one of the friendliest welcomes in the game. It is a regular Open final qualifying venue and one of the most satisfying and accessible great rounds on the coast, easy to pair with Muirfield next door.

05

Archerfield, Fidra Course

Dirleton · Archerfield Links

A modern links experience in the old Archerfield estate near Dirleton, where the Fidra and Dirleton courses wind through pine and sea buckthorn behind the dunes. The Fidra is the longer, more exposed of the two, a fine, contemporary test on classic ground with a sleek clubhouse and lodges on site. More of a resort feel than the historic clubs, it suits a group that wants comfort and easy booking alongside championship East Lothian golf, and it rounds out a links tour nicely.

06

Dalmahoy, East Course

James Braid · west of Edinburgh

The best parkland round near the city and the closest of this list, a James Braid design in the grounds of a country house hotel just southwest of Edinburgh, a short drive from the airport. Mature trees, water and rolling fairways give it a very different character from the coastal links, and it has hosted the Solheim Cup and European Tour events. With a hotel and spa on site it is the easy, comfortable choice for a group wanting golf, lodging and the city all in one place.

07

Royal Burgess Golfing Society

Barnton, Edinburgh · founded 1735

History in the city itself, the home of the oldest golfing society in the world, founded in 1735, on a mature parkland course at Barnton in northwest Edinburgh. Old Tom Morris had a hand in the layout, and the round is a gentle, characterful walk among established trees, less a championship test than a pilgrimage to where the organized game began. For a golfer who loves the story of golf, a round here and a look at the clubhouse treasures is a fitting bookend to a links trip.

Edinburgh golf questions

What is the best golf course near Edinburgh?

Muirfield, home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers in Gullane, is our pick, a sixteen time host of the Open Championship about forty minutes east of the city and one of the greatest links in the world. North Berwick's quirky, historic West Links and Tom Doak's Renaissance Club, host of the Genesis Scottish Open, are the next two. All sit on the East Lothian golf coast just east of Edinburgh.

How far is the East Lothian golf coast from Edinburgh?

Close. The cluster of great links around Gullane and North Berwick lies roughly thirty to fifty minutes east of central Edinburgh along the coast road, so a golfer can base in the city and reach Muirfield, Gullane, North Berwick, the Renaissance Club and Archerfield as easy day trips. Within about a thirty minute radius there are more than twenty courses.

Can visitors play Muirfield?

Yes, on limited days. Muirfield, a private members club, welcomes visitor play on designated days, usually with advance booking and a handicap requirement, and traditionally offers a foursomes round and lunch. Tee times are limited and sought after, so book well ahead, and always confirm access, dress code and fees directly before booking.

When is the best time to play golf near Edinburgh?

May to September is the prime window, with the longest days, the firmest links turf and the warmest, though never warm, weather. East Lothian is among the driest corners of Scotland, so it plays well through the shoulder months too, and the wind off the Firth of Forth is a constant companion at any time of year. Always confirm tee times and fees directly before booking.
