Monsoon Season Golf in Southeast Asia

The southwest monsoon runs broadly from May to October across mainland Southeast Asia, and it does not mean the golf stops. Here is when the rains fall by country, what to expect on the course, and where to keep playing in the sun, including the one island that runs entirely against the grain.

What the monsoon really means for golf

The phrase monsoon season sounds like a washout, but for golfers in Southeast Asia it is closer to a value season than a closed one. Across the mainland, the southwest monsoon brings warm, humid air and rain that tends to arrive in heavy afternoon bursts rather than days of unbroken drizzle. Mornings are frequently dry, the courses are at their greenest, the crowds thin out and green fees fall to their lowest of the year.

The trick is to match the destination to the calendar. The region is not one climate but several, and a few hundred miles can be the difference between a soaked round and a perfect one. Thailand even splits down the middle, with the Andaman coast around Phuket and the Gulf coast around Hua Hin running on opposite schedules, while Bali sits in dry sunshine through the very months the mainland is wettest. Read the table below, plan around the mornings, and the monsoon becomes one of the smartest times to travel.

Where the golf stays good through the rains

These are the destinations we send golfers to when the mainland monsoon is in full swing from May to October, ranked by how reliably the sun keeps shining and the fairways stay firm.

1

Hua Hin, Thailand

Across the peninsula from Phuket, the Gulf coast around Hua Hin keeps its driest, most reliable golf weather through the May to October monsoon, with mountain backed courses and morning tee times that dodge the afternoon showers. It is the obvious switch when the Andaman coast is wet.

2

Bali, Indonesia

Bali turns the calendar on its head. While the Southeast Asian mainland is in monsoon, Bali's dry season runs from April to October, so the height of the regional rains is exactly when its clifftop and parkland courses are at their sunniest and best.

3

Danang and Central Vietnam

From roughly February to August the central Vietnamese coast around Danang and Hoi An is dry and hot, so a summer golf trip that would be a washout further south finds firm fairways and a run of strong resort courses along the coast.

4

Kuala Lumpur and the West Coast, Malaysia

Malaysia sees rain year round, but the west coast and the highlands drain quickly and the storms tend to be short, so with early tee times the courses around Kuala Lumpur stay very playable through the mainland monsoon.

5

Northern Thailand in the shoulder

Chiang Mai and the north are green and uncrowded in the wet months, with cooler air than the lowlands and storms that usually clear by evening, making the shoulder of the monsoon a value rich time to play if you are flexible.

Monsoon golf questions

When is the monsoon season in Southeast Asia?

Across most of the mainland, including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, the southwest monsoon runs broadly from May to October, though it can start in May and ease by September depending on the year and the location. Bali and parts of Indonesia run opposite, with their wet season from November to March.

Can you still play golf during the monsoon in Southeast Asia?

Yes. Outside of the heaviest storms, the rain usually comes in short afternoon bursts rather than all day, so morning tee times often get a full round in. Courses are at their greenest, the crowds thin out, and green fees fall to their lowest of the year, which makes the monsoon a genuine value season for flexible golfers.

Where should I play if I want to avoid the rain?

Match the destination to the calendar. When Phuket is wet from May to October, switch to Hua Hin on Thailand's Gulf coast, or fly to Bali, whose dry season runs at exactly that time. Central Vietnam around Danang is dry through much of the summer, and the Malaysian west coast plays through most of the year with early tee times.

What should I pack for monsoon golf?

Bring quality waterproofs, a couple of dry gloves in sealed bags, spare socks, an umbrella and shoes with good grip, and plan to play early in the day. Build a little flexibility into the schedule so a rare washout can be moved rather than lost.
