The Best Golf Courses in Santiago

Chile's capital plays its golf in the eastern foothills, where mature parkland fairways run up toward the snow line and the Andes fill the sky behind almost every green. The best clubs are private and historic, founded by the British community a century ago, and the standard at the top is genuinely high. Here are the six courses we rate most highly across the Santiago Metropolitan region, ranked.

How we chose them

We weighed each course on design quality, condition and setting, and on how it fits a golf trip to Chile's capital. Santiago's golf is concentrated in the affluent eastern districts of Las Condes, Vitacura, La Reina and Lo Barnechea, at the foot of the cordillera, so altitude, mountain views and mature trees define the experience rather than wind off the sea. Most of the leading clubs are private, so we have noted clearly which welcome visitors and which need an introduction.

Every founding date and detail here was checked at the time of writing against club and federation sources. The order and the verdicts are ours, and access to the private clubs varies, so always confirm before you travel. Tell us your dates and your group and one concierge arranges the tee times, the introductions and the stay, often pairing a few city rounds with the coast at Marbella or the wine country to the south.

The ranking

01

Club de Golf Los Leones

Founded 1910 · Las Condes · par 71

The grand old club of Chilean golf and the clear number one in the city. Founded in 1910 and settled at the foot of Cerro San Luis in Las Condes, Los Leones is a mature, tree lined parkland course that has been refined over the decades, most recently by the British architects Mackenzie and Ebert. The conditioning is immaculate, the membership exclusive and the Andes backdrop unforgettable. It is consistently rated the best course in Chile and the round to build a Santiago trip around.

02

Prince of Wales Country Club

Founded 1925 · La Reina · par 72

A handsome, well established private club in La Reina, founded in 1925 and named for the British monarch of the day. The course is a classic parkland test framed by mature planting, with the mountains rising to the east, and the club is one of the most respected sporting institutions in the city. A polished, traditional members' course that sits just behind Los Leones for sheer pedigree, and a natural second round on a city based trip.

03

Club de Golf Sport Frances

Private members' club · Vitacura · 18 holes

A leafy, central club in Vitacura, woven into one of Santiago's most desirable neighborhoods. Sport Frances offers a well kept eighteen holes with the relaxed, sociable feel of a city club and the cordillera always in view. It is shorter and gentler than the championship layouts above, which makes it a fine, walkable round for a mixed group and an easy add to a few days in the city.

04

Valle Escondido Golf Club

Hillside parkland · Lo Barnechea, Arrayan valley · 18 holes

A scenic course set up the Arrayan valley in Lo Barnechea, higher into the foothills than the city clubs and closer still to the mountains. The terrain rolls and tumbles, giving the round real movement and some memorable elevated views back over Santiago. A characterful, more rugged alternative to the manicured parkland below, and a good choice for players who want the cordillera right on top of them.

05

Hacienda Chicureo Club de Golf

Modern eighteen holes · Chicureo, north of the city · par 72

A more contemporary eighteen on the northern edge of the metropolitan area at Chicureo, a fast growing residential corner of the valley. The layout is open and generous by Santiago standards, set against the surrounding hills, and the club is a comfortable, well run modern facility. A relaxed, scenic round that broadens a trip beyond the older central clubs without a long drive from the center.

06

Mapocho Golf Club

Public par 72 · Pudahuel, by the Costanera Norte · par 72

The easiest tee time in the city to secure on your own, a public par 72 out at Pudahuel near the Costanera Norte and the airport road. It will not match the private clubs for pedigree or condition, but it is open to all, good value and a genuinely useful option for a visiting golfer wanting to play without an introduction. A sensible warm up round or a fallback when the members' clubs are closed to guests.

Golf in Santiago: questions

What is the best golf course in Santiago, Chile?

Club de Golf Los Leones in Las Condes is widely regarded as the finest course in Santiago and one of the best in Chile, a parkland layout founded in 1910 with the Andes as a backdrop and recent design work by Mackenzie and Ebert. Prince of Wales Country Club in La Reina and Club de Golf Sport Frances in Vitacura are the next calls, both established private city clubs.

Can visitors play golf in Santiago?

Most of Santiago's leading clubs, including Los Leones, Prince of Wales and Sport Frances, are private and are best played as the guest of a member or through a tour operator that arranges access. Mapocho Golf Club in Pudahuel is open to the public and the easiest tee time to secure independently. We can arrange introductions and tee times at the private clubs as part of a planned trip.

When is the best time to play golf in Santiago?

Santiago's seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere. The prime months run from spring through autumn, roughly October to April, with warm, dry summer days from December to February and clear Andes views. Winter, June to August, is cool and can be wet, though courses stay open. Mornings are calmest. Always confirm seasonal conditions and access before booking.

How far are Santiago's golf courses from the city?

Most of Santiago's golf sits in the eastern, higher neighborhoods at the foot of the Andes. Los Leones, Sport Frances and San Cristobal are within the city in Las Condes and Vitacura, Prince of Wales is in La Reina, and Valle Escondido is up the Arrayan valley in Lo Barnechea. Hacienda Chicureo and Mapocho are on the northern and western edges, each a short drive from the center, so the city makes an easy single base.
