The Best Golf Courses in Sardinia

Sardinia keeps a small but seriously good golf scene, anchored by a Robert Trent Jones masterpiece on the Costa Smeralda and a cluster of fine resort courses across the south. Granite, maquis and the bluest water in the Mediterranean make it one of Europe's most beautiful places to play. Here are the five courses we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Sardinia is not a mass golf destination, and that is part of the appeal. The island has a handful of courses rather than a hundred, but the best of them are genuinely world class, set among some of the most dramatic coastline in the Mediterranean. Pevero, the Robert Trent Jones Sr design commissioned by the Aga Khan above the bays of the Costa Smeralda, is the anchor and one of Italy's finest courses. Around it the south offers a quartet of resort layouts at Pula, Villasimius, Narbolia and San Teodoro that turn a beach holiday into a golf one.

We weighed design pedigree, conditioning, setting and how each course fits a relaxed island trip, which is how Sardinia is best played. All of these are resort and club courses that welcome visitors, busiest and dearest on the Costa Smeralda in summer and more affordable in the south and the shoulder seasons. Every designer, year and detail was checked at the time of writing. The order and the verdicts are our editors' view, so reasonable people will reorder the field. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Pevero Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones Sr · early 1970s · par 72 · Costa Smeralda

The island's headline round and one of the best in Italy, a Robert Trent Jones Sr design commissioned by the Aga Khan and laid out between the bays of Cala di Volpe and Pevero on the Costa Smeralda. It threads through granite outcrops and Mediterranean maquis with sea views at almost every turn, a course as beautiful as it is strategic, asking for precise placement off the tee and brave lines over the scrub. Exclusive, immaculate and unforgettable, it is reason enough to bring the clubs to Sardinia.

02

Is Molas Golf Resort

Cotton, Pennink & Mancinelli · par 72 · Santa Margherita di Pula

The benchmark of southern Sardinian golf for more than thirty years, a 27 hole resort at Santa Margherita di Pula whose championship 18 has hosted the Italian Open. Laid out by Cotton, Pennink and Partners with Piero Mancinelli over rolling ground a short stroll from the sea, it is a mature, well bunkered par 72 of around 6,400 meters with on site lodging and the most golf in one place on the island. The natural base for a southern trip and a genuine peer to Pevero.

03

Is Arenas Golf and Country Club

Von Hagge, Smelek & Baril · par 72 · Narbolia, west coast

A striking layout on the quieter west coast near Narbolia, a Robert von Hagge design that plays through a forest of stone pine and juniper close to the sea. The bold bunkering and contoured greens give it real bite, and the cool, shaded fairways are a welcome contrast to the open coastal courses. A par 72 of around 6,300 meters and the pick of the west, it rewards the group willing to venture beyond the Costa Smeralda for a different, wilder feel.

04

Tanka Golf Club

Villasimius · par 70 · south-east coast

A compact, scenic resort course at Villasimius on the south east coast, named Best New Golf Course in Italy when it opened, with sweeping views over Capo Carbonara and its marine reserve. At around 5,400 meters it is shorter than the championship courses, but the front nine asks real questions and the setting, all turquoise water and granite headlands, is among the prettiest on the island. The natural round for a beach based trip to the Villasimius coast.

05

Puntaldia Golf Club

San Teodoro · 9 holes · east coast

A pretty nine hole course set right on the shore at San Teodoro on the east coast, an easy, enjoyable round with the sea as a constant companion. It will not test a low handicapper the way Pevero does, but it is a charming addition to a relaxed family or couples holiday in the area, and a fine way to play a quick eighteen over two loops before the beach. The most laid back golf on the list and a lovely setting.

Sardinia golf questions

What is the best golf course in Sardinia?

Pevero Golf Club on the Costa Smeralda is the best course in Sardinia and one of the finest in Italy. A Robert Trent Jones Sr design commissioned by the Aga Khan, it threads between granite outcrops and Mediterranean maquis above two bays. Is Molas and Is Arenas in the south and west are its closest rivals, but Pevero leads any serious list of the island's courses.

When is the best time to play golf in Sardinia?

Spring from April to June and autumn from September to October are ideal, with warm, dry days and the courses in good order before and after the summer crowds. High summer is hot and busy on the Costa Smeralda, while the mild winters offer quiet golf and the best value of the year in the south.

Can visitors play golf in Sardinia?

Yes. Sardinia's courses are resort and club layouts that welcome visitors, with tee times bookable in advance, though Pevero and the Costa Smeralda courses are busiest and dearest in summer. The southern courses around Pula and Villasimius are more openly available. Always confirm access and fees directly before booking.
