Who this trip suits

A buddies golf trip to Japan is for the group that has played the obvious destinations and wants something genuinely different. The golf is among the best in the world, much of it bearing the fingerprints of the English architect Charles Hugh Alison, who spent a few months in Japan in 1930 and left a run of courses that still top the national rankings. Add the bullet trains, the spotless conditioning, the hot spring baths and the food, and a Japan trip is as much a cultural adventure as a golf tour. It suits a tight knit group of keen golfers who relish the planning, the access and the sheer novelty of it all.

Be clear about access, because it is the whole game here. Several of Japan's greatest courses are private members clubs that ask for an introduction, so a visiting group needs the right help to get on, and that is exactly what we arrange. The resort courses, led by the Fuji Course at Kawana, are open to hotel guests and bookable directly, and around them sit the bucket list private clubs we secure access to. With the introductions made and the tee times held, the group simply turns up and plays. This is a trip best built with a planner, and it rewards the effort like few others.

The courses to build around

Kawana, Fuji Course

Ito, Shizuoka · C.H. Alison, 1936 · Resort, hotel guests

The headline round and the one a group can simply book, a C.H. Alison design from 1936 above Sagami Bay long called the Pebble Beach of Japan, though far more mountainous, with the sea framing the green at the short second. Open to guests of the Kawana hotel, it is the accessible jewel of any Japan trip and a world top 100 course.

Best time to book

Japan golf is best in the long, settled shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, roughly April to early June and late September to November, when the weather is mild and dry and the courses are at their immaculate best. Spring brings the cherry blossom and autumn the colour, both glorious backdrops for golf, while the rainy season in June and July and the heat and typhoons of high summer are best avoided. Winter golf is playable in the warmer south on Kyushu when the main island courses are cold. Because the private club access takes time to secure and the resort rooms fill in the peak shoulder weeks, pin down the trip early. A trip booked in good time secures the introductions, the courses and the hotels you want at the rate you want.

Japan buddies golf trip questions

Can a group of friends play golf in Japan?

Yes, with the right help. Many of Japan's greatest courses are private and ask for a member introduction, but a visiting buddies group can absolutely play them when access is arranged in advance through an operator, and the resort courses such as the Fuji Course at Kawana are open to hotel guests. We secure the introductions and tee times, so the group plays the courses it wants and simply turns up to tee off.

Which Japanese courses should a buddies trip play?

The courses to build around are the C.H. Alison designed masterpieces: Kawana's Fuji Course, the resort layout above Sagami Bay open to hotel guests, Hirono near Kobe, widely rated the best course in Japan, and Naruo nearby, with the tournament golf of Phoenix Country Club at Seagaia in Miyazaki for a warmer southern leg. A week pairs the Kansai region around Kobe and Osaka with a resort stay, all reached by the bullet train.

How much does it cost in 2026?

Indicatively, a week with hotels, four to five rounds, the marquee course access and rail or transfers runs from around 3,500 to 6,000 US dollars per person, rising for the top resorts and the most exclusive private clubs, and excluding international flights. Access, season and hotels all move the number, so always confirm directly before booking.

Can you arrange the tee times, access and hotels together?

Yes. Submit a brief and one concierge costs the whole trip to the head, securing the private course introductions and the resort tee times in the best order, booking the hotels and arranging the rail and transfers, then routes it to a vetted operator. You book once and the group just plays.
