5 Day Texas Hill Country Golf Itinerary
A point to point golf week through the prettiest corner of Texas: three Robert Trent Jones Sr courses on one resort beside Lake LBJ, then a run south through the wine country to Boerne and San Antonio. Granite outcrops, limestone canyons, live oaks and a closing round on a former PGA Tour stage. Here is the plan, day by day.

Who this trip suits
This is the itinerary for the golfer who wants resort comfort, variety and the scenery of the Hill Country without long transfers between rounds. The first three days never leave Horseshoe Bay Resort, the only resort in the continental United States with three Robert Trent Jones Sr courses on one property, then the trip eases south through Fredericksburg's wine country to Boerne and the edge of San Antonio for two more rounds. It suits a buddies trip, a couple who both play, or a corporate group looking for a premium, low hassle Texas golf week.
It is also flexible. Add a day at Comanche Trace in Kerrville or the celebrated private Boot Ranch near Fredericksburg if access can be arranged, or stretch the Horseshoe Bay stay for a more relaxed pace. The 5 day plan
Horseshoe Bay Resort, Slick Rock
Open on the most playable and photogenic of the three, a par 72 of about 6,834 yards that rolls through live oaks, water and flowers. Slick Rock is home to the famous Million Dollar Hole, the par 4 14th, where the cart path winds beneath a waterfall that spans more than 35 yards. A relaxed, scenic start that lets you settle into the resort. Check in at Horseshoe Bay for three nights and let the golf come to you.
Horseshoe Bay Resort, Apple Rock
The scenery round. Apple Rock is one of the most picturesque courses in Texas, a par 72 with dramatic elevation changes through the Hill Country that finishes along the shores of Lake LBJ. The greens are bold and the views constant, and many leave rating it the prettiest of the Horseshoe Bay three. An easy second day on the same property, no driving required.
Horseshoe Bay Resort, Ram Rock
The stern test. Ram Rock is the toughest of the resort's three RTJ Sr courses, a demanding layout that has long been rated among the hardest in Texas, with tight driving lines, firm greens and little margin for error. Play it on day three, when your game is warm and your eye is in. Round off the Horseshoe Bay stay with dinner at the resort before the move south.
Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort
Drive south through Fredericksburg's wine country and check in near Boerne. Tapatio Springs is a public Hill Country resort course, redesigned by Tripp Davis in 2015 and named one of the nation's most improved public courses, threading the cedar and limestone valleys with creeks in play and big country all around. A welcoming, well kept round and a fine base for the wineries and the German heritage towns. About 90 minutes from Horseshoe Bay.
La Cantera Resort Course
Finish on a Tour stage. The Resort Course at La Cantera, designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf and opened in 1995, hosted the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open from 1995 to 2009. Carved through a former quarry on the northwest edge of San Antonio, it tumbles over rock outcrops and ravines with the city below, a dramatic, memorable close to the week before a flight out of San Antonio. About 30 minutes from Boerne.

When to go and where to stay
Spring, March to May, and fall, October to November, are the windows, with comfortable temperatures and, in spring, the Hill Country's famous bluebonnets and wildflowers. Summers are hot, so book early tee times and use a cart, while winter golf is very playable on mild days. Base at Horseshoe Bay Resort for the first three nights, then move to a hotel near Boerne or on the northwest side of San Antonio for the last two. A hire car is essential, and the drive south through Fredericksburg, with its wineries, German bakeries and Main Street, is one of the pleasures of the trip in its own right.
