5 Day Canadian Rockies Golf Itinerary

Five days of mountain golf among the most spectacular scenery the game can offer. This trip runs west from Calgary through the Bow Valley, from the resort courses of Kananaskis and Canmore to Stanley Thompson's immortal Banff Springs, and over the divide to Greywolf at Panorama. Elk on the fairways, glaciers on the skyline and pure, thin mountain air. Here is the plan, with indicative 2026 green fees and drive times.

Who this trip suits

This is mountain golf at its grandest, built for the golfer who wants the scenery to be as memorable as the round. The Canadian Rockies pack a remarkable cluster of courses into the Bow Valley west of Calgary, all within easy drives of one another, set beneath snow capped peaks with rivers, lakes and wildlife in play. It suits a buddies group flying into Calgary for a long week, or couples and families pairing the golf with the national parks, the wildlife and the spa and dining of the grand mountain resorts.

The route is a simple line west, so you are never doubling back. We open on the accessible resort courses, build to the Stanley Thompson classic at Banff Springs, one of the most beautiful courses on earth, and finish with a dramatic drive over the divide to Greywolf. The season is short and the marquee tee times go early, so the trip rewards booking ahead, but the golf itself is welcoming, public and made for visitors.

The 5 day plan

Day 1Kananaskis

Kananaskis Country Golf Course

Robert Trent Jones Sr, 1983 · par 72 · indicative 165 to 220 dollars

Ease into the trip an hour west of Calgary at Kananaskis, a Robert Trent Jones Senior design with two courses, Mount Lorette and Mount Kidd, rebuilt and reopened after the 2013 flood. Big, fair and framed by the Kananaskis peaks, with the Kidd and Lorette mountains looming over the holes, it is a superb opener and a forgiving way to find your altitude legs. About an hour from the airport and forty minutes from Canmore.

Day 2Silvertip

Silvertip Golf Course, Canmore

Les Furber, 1998 · par 72 · indicative 180 to 240 dollars

The thrill ride of the trip. Les Furber carved Silvertip into the slopes above Canmore, a target course with around six hundred feet of elevation change, blind shots, plunging tee shots and the Three Sisters peaks filling the sky. It is dramatic, demanding and unforgettable, more about picking your spots than overpowering it. Minutes from a Canmore base, and a stunning clubhouse for lunch afterward.

Day 3Stewart Creek

Stewart Creek Golf Club, Canmore

Gary Browning, 2000 · par 72 · indicative 165 to 220 dollars

The other Canmore gem, and a touch friendlier than Silvertip. Gary Browning routed Stewart Creek through pine forest and over old coal mine workings, with several openings to the mountains and the remains of the mine shafts a quirky feature along the way. Beautifully conditioned and a pleasure to walk or ride, it rounds out the Canmore leg before you move into the parks. A few minutes from town.

Day 4Banff Springs

Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course

Stanley Thompson, 1928 · par 71 · indicative 190 to 300 dollars

The centerpiece, and one of the most beautiful courses in the world. Stanley Thompson laid out the Stanley Thompson Eighteen in 1928 beneath the castle like Banff Springs hotel, the Bow River and Mount Rundle framing hole after hole. The par 3 fourth, the Devil's Cauldron, played across a glacial lake to a green under the mountain, is among the most famous one shotters anywhere. Inside Banff National Park, so expect elk by the fairways. Book this round well ahead.

Day 5Greywolf

Greywolf Golf Course, Panorama

Doug Carrick, 1999 · par 72 · indicative 150 to 215 dollars

Cross the divide into British Columbia for a grand finale. Doug Carrick's Greywolf at Panorama is a mountain course of the highest order, its par 3 sixth, the Cliffhanger, played from a tee perched above a rocky gorge to a green far below, a signature hole golfers travel for. The drive through Radium Hot Springs is a highlight in itself. About two hours from Banff, so an early start or a night near Panorama works best.

When to go and where to stay

The mountain season is short, roughly May to early October, with the marquee courses such as Banff Springs typically opening around mid May and July and August the warmest and busiest months under long daylight. June and September are quieter and often better value, though snow can arrive early at altitude, so check opening dates and conditions before you commit. Base in Canmore or Banff for the core of the trip, central to Kananaskis, the Canmore pair and Banff Springs, choosing from the grand Fairmont hotels to lodges and condos, and add a night near Panorama for the Greywolf finale. A hire car is essential for the mountain drives, and Calgary airport is about an hour and a half from Canmore. Watch for wildlife on the roads and the fairways alike.
